The location was great for us. Rue Poncelet is a quiet street, with a pedestrian-only section full of food shops, an excellent boulangerie, and several restaurants. We were a few minutes away from two métro lines and several bus lines. The owner was easy to communicate with and accommodated us by allowing us to leave our bags in the apartment two hours before check-in time.

The apartment itself is another story. The mattress on the pullout sofa was stained and grimy. We flipped it over to the less-stained side, but it was full of bits of food and debris, and it looked like no one had cleaned under the couch for months. There is peeling paint on the wall in the bedroom, and the furniture is rickety: a chair collapsed when our small six year-old sat on it. The kitchen also needs some help. We had mismatched, chipped dishes; peeling non-stick pans with only one lid; a leaky coffee maker; dull, bent knives and a melted plastic cutting board. I know we were just short-term renters who shouldn't expect a Cordon-Bleu space, but most of the dishes in the cabinet were dirty when we arrived, so we had to wash them before using, and something as basic as making coffee was a pain. Also, the internet was unreliable. I am not saying this as some sort of entitled first-world person. I'm mentioning it because nowadays, internet is essential in Paris for doing things such as buying Navigo Passes, getting bus schedules and tickets to museums--basically functioning in daily life. Lastly, I am assuming the upstairs neighbor is a permanent resident of the building, so their needs absolutely take priority over mine as a vacation renter. They frequently vacuumed at 7:00 in the morning and ran around, thumping until about 10:00 pm, so we were very aware of their presence when they were home. Again, it's their prerogative as this is where they live, and we were only there for two weeks, but it's something other people who are looking for a quiet place to stay might want to take into account. I would never ask the residents to change or modify their habits.
