I returned to the International Atene Hotel this year after staying here last year—and I think that says more than any star rating ever could! I booked it again before setting off on my cruise around the Greek Islands because it ticks so many boxes for me. The location is fantastic. You're right in the heart of bustling Omonia, with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets and convenience stores all around you, many open until late. The Metro is just a short walk away, making it incredibly easy to explore Athens. If you enjoy walking as much as I do, you'll be pleased to know that I comfortably walked from the hotel to the National Archaeological Museum, Varvakios Agora, the Ancient Agora and even Syntagma Square. For shoppers, the nearby Hondos Center is worth a visit, especially its excellent rooftop food court when you need a break from sightseeing. The rooms are simple rather than luxurious, but they're clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. If you enjoy watching city life go by, ask for a front-facing room with a balcony overlooking the street. The rear rooms overlook an office building, so they tend to be quieter but without the view. I know some travellers hesitate when they hear "Omonia Square," but I honestly think its reputation is a little harsher than the reality. Yes, there are a few side streets that look a bit rough and you'll see people who are clearly down on their luck. However, during both of my stays I never felt harassed or threatened. The hotel is right next to a police station, the main streets are well lit, and—as with any major city—using a little common sense goes a long way. One of the biggest reasons I came back was the staff. They genuinely make you feel welcome and are always happy to help. A special mention goes to Dina, Valentina, Erica and Nikos, along with the wonderful day and night reception teams. They always greeted me with a smile, answered my endless tourist questions with patience, and somehow managed to make me feel like a returning friend rather than just another guest. Breakfast is another pleasant surprise. There's an impressive selection to get your day started, and as someone who loves Greek food, seeing generous slabs of feta and delicious olives each morning certainly put a smile on my face. Let's just say I never left the breakfast room hungry—and my waistband can probably confirm that! If you're looking for a clean, well-priced hotel with excellent staff, a superb central location and easy access to all that Athens has to offer, I'd happily recommend the International Atene Hotel. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to stay here again... in fact, I've already proved that by coming back!

I did not like that in the agoda site, although mentioned included fees and taxes, does not specifically state that an environmental fee of 10euros/night is an add-on, paid at check-in. Other establishments mention it. Staff a little inexperienced, lacking professionalism of a 4* hotel. Glam entrance, reception and breakfast area, a little 80's feeling. Room nice but big, long smudges (from moving furniture?) on the walls created an unpleasant feeling. Should be painted. Also, signs of poor construction quality, here and there, like gap between wall and floor tiles. Walls somewhat empty. Furniture a bit IKEA glam. Bathroom very nice, modern, spacious. Chair on balcony old, dirty and falling apart. Balcony nice, inviting, with adequate space. Breakfast, included in the price. Decent effort. Disappointing that coffee machine did not have options for coffees with milk, like cappuccino. 3* hotels have coffee machines that offer such options. As I said, nice hotel, would recommend, but not really a 4*
