    the lake facing room as far as i could tell was much bigger, better renovated and more modern than the non lake facing room which was small, outdated and inconvenient. definitely go with the better room. location is right next to the sightseeing boat departure point, and next to the beginning of the kamuy lumina route. there's a footbath right in front of the hotel too - highly recommend it in the evenings! the staff were all very nice and helpful when we had questions. there weren't too many guests so we could use the nearby parking area. my only note about the room is that although all rooms are supposed to be non smoking, previous guest had definitely smoked in my room, and the smell was strong. the breakfast and dinner buffets weren't great. for breakfast i think it's better to go to bar the pan/pan the pan, both nearby, if they're open. or even get a sandwich and a drink from one of the konbinis. for dinner unfortunately there aren't really options within akanko onsen other than eating at the hotel. we tried finding our own dinner the first night, but it must be a very low season here in the beginning of july, because two places that were open for dinner on Google maps, we found out were closed. after that we resigned ourselves to dinner at the hotel. it's a buffet so don't expect amazing freshness or flavor.

    The lake view room was beautiful. The room was pretty large for the both of us and we stayed for one night. The smell was slight in the room; almost of smoke but we had a non-smoking room. We didn't visit the hot springs but we walked around the area and it was quite dead. The buffet was okay - the breakfast one was better than the dinner buffet. The staff didn't seem or want to acknowledge us too often, I suppose its becuase we were foreigners.
