Unfortunately, our stay did not meet expectations, particularly given that this room was sold as “superior”.
On arrival, the hotel was unable to find our booking, which was already frustrating. When a room was eventually allocated, it had one queen size bed, which was inappropriate as I was travelling with my 18 year old son. This was despite our original booking clearly being for a twin bed. We then had to wait again for another room to be made available.
The room we were finally given was very dated and in poor condition. There were visible cracks in walls and tiles, peeling paint, damaged fittings, worn fixtures, stained surfaces and general signs of neglect throughout the room and bathroom. The room we were finally given was very dated and in poor condition. There were visible cracks in walls and tiles, peeling paint, damaged fittings, worn fixtures, stained surfaces and general signs of neglect throughout the room and bathroom. The photos show this clearly. This is not what I would expect from a superior category room, and the hotel as a whole appears in need of significant renovation.
Our booking also stated that tea and coffee making facilities were included, however these were not provided in the room. There were also no ironing facilities available in the room, which was disappointing given the room category.
The bed had only a single sheet and no blanket or duvet. This was very uncomfortable, especially as my son used the air conditioning, and I was extremely cold overnight.
The balcony railing was also shaky, which I consider a safety concern, particularly for families travelling with younger children.
Staff were pleasant and polite, but did not seem empowered or informed. Most basic questions required them to go and ask a manager, which slowed everything down and made communication difficult. At another nearby hotel, a security guard told us there was a sister hotel directly on the beach where facilities could be shared. When I asked the Sunbay receptionist about this, I was simply told to go over there myself and ask, which was unhelpful.
There are additional costs to be aware of. Beach towels require a $15 deposit per person, which was not clearly explained in advance.
For comparison, I paid £613 for four nights, including breakfast for two people. The hotel is listed as three star, however based on our experience I would rate it closer to two star at best. To put this into perspective, a recent stay in Dubai at a four star hotel included half board for two people at £603, offering significantly better accommodation, service and overall value for money.
While Barbados is a beautiful destination, experiences like this highlight that travellers can often receive far more for their money elsewhere, with much higher standards of service and accommodation.
On my first days at the hotel, every other guest I spoke to said they would never return. That really says it all. I am simply glad that we are only here for four nights before moving on to an Airbnb.
On the positive side, breakfast was actually very good and varied, despite some negative reviews online. The pool area is also pleasant and well maintained.
Overall, while there are some positives, the condition of the rooms, lack of basic comfort, and poor organisation mean I would not describe this hotel, or the room we were given, as superior. With proper renovation and better staff support, it could be much improved, but at present it falls short. This is not what I would expect from a superior ca
