Bärenstein is located in the Müglitz Valley, a region rich in castles with many sights and leisure activities near the Czech border and is worth a visit at any time of year. In addition to visiting the many castles and palaces in the region, a visit to one of the many museums in the area, a ride on the summer toboggan run in Altenberg or a trip to the Osterzgebirge wildlife park are also worthwhile. Another excursion tip is a ride on the Müglitz Valley Railway, which also stops in Bärenstein. In summer, the densely wooded region in the Ore Mountains is an ideal area for cycling and hiking tours, and in winter the area is also a popular winter sports destination. Skiers and winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy over 70 kilometres of groomed ski slopes in nearby Altenberg (approx. 9 km away).
