The house is simply amazing, the place left us speechless. We arrived late in the evening, it was completely dark a part from the house that was warm with lights on. (We got scared by the hunted house nearby while out for a quick photoshoot in the night but this is what it’s supposed to do). You’ll find everything you need in the house, fast WiFi, extra warm blankets for the cold season. We woke up the next morning discovering the stunning surroundings in the sunrise light. I would definitely recommend a stay if staying or just driving by Durness. We are definitely looking for a longer stay maybe in spring or summer.

Our ferry got delayed from the Orkney because of the storm. I let the host know that we'd be arriving about 10pm and right away he said he'll prepare some food for us and I really appreciated it.
I noticed the damp smell but I was expecting that as I see in other reviews but we were only staying for a night so it wasn't an issue.
I also see people said that they didnt like it amd the property is next to haunted house but I'm loving it! How many times do you go on a trip and could tell people you stayed next to a huanted house? I've travelled the world and this is going to be the first time EVER!
The property was clean, the instruction that we were given was cleared. It's well worth the money.

We had a wonderful stay! The house is cozy and has everything you need inside — from kitchen essentials to comfortable furniture and thoughtful details. It really felt like a home away from home!
There was not hot water in the shower

Nice comfortable place with all you needed for an overnight stay.
Was very hot inside & couldn’t turn heating down, ended up having window open. Strange location opposite a mechanics yard.

Great value for the size and location. Just a short walk from Durness’ bars and shops. Next door to the world famous haunted house and chocolate mountain. Brilliant.

The location was interesting, great value, beds were very comfortable and we got to see the Milky Way as the sky's are so clear!
Nothing really after getting over the shock of a Halloween venue next door!

Phillip made the keys available upon arrival. Early evening he dropped by to see if we needed anything and if everything was in order. Despite loosing the heating, Phillip had made alternative heating available for us which perfect.

After hotel rooms and B&B, it was nice to be able to spread out in the wee house. The heating wasn't working, but the place was warm enough with panel heaters.
The water pressure for the shower was poor.

Lovely cozy cottage located in the craft village of Durness. Excellent hosts who were able to accommodate me for an additional night during Storm Amy. Located next door to the Durness Haunted House so a skeleton for a neighbour is quite unique.

It was clean and the beds were comfortable.
Location was questionable and the exterior was not to our taste. The haunted house next door and the scrap yard certainly made it a memorable stay!
Low shower pressure.

We stayed at various locations during our NC 500 trip and this was by far my favourite. The house felt welcoming and homely, was very well equipped and decorated in a quirky style which I liked very much. It was clean and very comfortable, particularly the beds. The kitchen had all that is needed and everything was easy to use.
We have no complaints at all about this property.(maybe apart from the fact that we are both in our 70's and one of us has difficulty getting up out of low chairs ! Perhaps one higher chair in the living room ?

It was very clean, comfortable and had quirky decor. It had everything you would need.
It was in an odd place, almost like an industrial estate so not very pretty to look at.

Spacious house, comfortable and cosy. Fully equipped kitchen and nice sitting room. Located inside the wee craft village!
The view directly outside is not very nice.

The location was fantastic and the house would be excellent if it was clean
There had clearly been dogs staying before us and we couldn’t sit in the lounge due to the disgusting taste and smell of dogs

The place was a decent size for the four of us. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The town was so fun. The bunnies in the yard were so fun to watch.
We quickly discovered our socks got filthy from the floors, even though when we arrived, we could see and smell they’d just been washed. We had to carefully plan our showers with four of us to avoid ice cold showers. Kitchen could have used some more cooking supplies. I was so allergic the whole time I was there and wondered if dogs lived there normally. Pics online don’t show you’re next door to a rundown haunted house and junkyard of sorts across the street.

Yes when you first arrive it looks like you are entering a scrapyard and you think oh heck . Whilst reading up on the history of the village this is all in keeping with the vibe of the place .On entering the property it’s clean and tidy with everything you could want though .
We would gladly stop here again and I can’t say fairer than that.
A plug in the bathroom sink would help .

The area around is just amazing. The house looks a bit grim on the outside but is much better indoors. It is cosy and comfortable and surprisingly spacious. The place is a part of the history of the area. I'm glad we chose it to stay.
Two of the doors stick on the floor. (I'd guess the tiles on the floor are new). Outside the house across the way is untidy but it doesn't matter.

It was very clean, comfy and just what we needed after a long ride on motorbikes to chill and relax.
The owner was very welcoming
First impressions /view upon arrival although once inside and settled in it wasn’t an issue.

Plenty of room for a family
To me this property had a smell of a dog, which makes sense as digs are allowed. As a dog owner I didn’t mind to much however an air freshener would have made the place feel less stuffy.

A quirky, spacious home including a separate lounge, a dining room, well -equipped kitchen, laundry with a washing machine and a dryer, two bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower over bath, with plenty of hot water and 3 adjustable pressures. It was very quiet, with garden views from several windows (including cute rabbits keeping the grass down for free). Parking was just a few steps away.
The bed was a bit soft and bowed in the middle. The area around looks a bit the worst for wear, but the craft stores were interesting and everyone was friendly.

Very clean, warm and comfortable. Contained everything you needed for a one night stay. Like the other reviews have mentioned just ignore the front of the house. You can’t fault the inside.

A comfortable, well equipped self contained cottage close to the beach and a craft village in which there is an excellent chocolate making business /coffee cafe.
A quiet location, comfortable bed, very helpful host.
The host offers other products and services such as art, hair cuts and massage. I had an excellent shoulder massage done in our cottage.
We enjoyed watching the rabbits in the garden.
There is no television available but the host supplies many DVDs that can be played on the television set.

Just a simple basic place to stay, originally booked for 3 but then reduced to 1 couple, if there’s 3 or 4 it’s a bargain. For 2 people not quite so. However couldn’t complain about anything, the host left everything you needed. Theres a Spar just up the road for all your needs, and a chocolatier on the site for hot drinks, croissants etc. easy enough to find on a kind of craft site.
The location is not what we expected, opposite a junk yard, a derelict haunted house themed building and a garage..it’s a bit weird… and not very pretty, but once you’ve shut the doors it’s fine, very basic but clean and has everything you need.

This clean and cosy cottage was perfect on our NC500 stopover at Durness ! It had everything we needed, including tea, coffee, milk, porridge and was in a quiet spot, about 10 minutes stroll to Balnakeil Beach ( stunning) and minutes from Loch Croispol and another Loch a bit further away on a beautiful hike.
Would definitely recommend!

Not a lot
Window furniture missing or broken, making the property insecure. Frayed bathroom mat. Property smelt of damp. Bed linen rough, and smelt musty. Dirty utility room, with outside door unable to open, due to electric cable running underneath it. Interior doors needed planing to shut or open fully. Food left in the freezer.

Availability near NC500. Quiet, warm, cosy. Quirky decoration.
Lovely walk to the picturesque beach.
Wi-Fi available when we hadn’t expected it.
Uncomfortable single bed, and no mirror in twin bed room.
No washing up bowl, no plug in bathroom sink.

The inside space was amazing, it was great to have chance to lounge about or sit at a table to eat after a few days of staying in smaller accommodations.
Everything we needed was there including a washing machine and tumble dryer.
As the title says definitely don't judge this place by its outside appearance! Look beyond the Haunted House and neighbouring properties and you've found a gem!

Due to unforeseen circumstances I needed to gift this booking to my sister.
Her experience here, was with mixed emotion.
She felt you needed to be very open minded about the proximity of the haunted house as this feature might not be to everyone’s taste.
The hosts have ensured however that the accommodation itself is very well presented and has everything you need for your stay.
The geographical location allowed for quick access to the breathtakingly beautiful beaches.
The setting has an unease about it (but this was just a personal feeling)
