The location of this little hotel in Shuzenji is right next to a beautiful leafy shrine and it's right off the main drag of the town, maybe four minutes walk from the temple and the bamboo forest. The owners were very friendly and responsive on the messenger app, answering our questions promptly. They have even been so kind as to forward a forgotten item to our next destination.

Gunjo and Shuzenji is an enchanted place and of all the places I have stayed across the world this is ‘hands down’ the best and most memorable. This has been the highlight of our trip. Masakazu and Asami the hosts are fabulous and were so helpful and generous. Everything has been thoughtfully considered by them from the linen sheets to the locally sourced hair and body products. Asami has a beautiful kimono store on site. The rooms and property is a step back in time and photos don’t do it justice. The views/outlook out of every window and door are breathtaking. Shuzenji is one of a kind and a ‘must do’. At 5am and 5pm everyday there are nine gongs rung out from the temple bell which our children got to do with the temple’s caretaker. By staying at Gunjo you get a discount at the beautiful public onsen just around the corner making it $3.50! Other great things are access to a 10kg washing machine on the premise and a basic kitchen which was great as we are a young family. Don’t hesitate to book. We look forward to coming back.

La chambre est spacieuse, avec plusieurs espaces, notamment une entrée qui donne sur les toilettes et la salle de bain, ainsi qu'un minuscule bureau, et un balcon intérieur/cuisine très agréable. Le cadre aussi est sympa, dans ce complexe en partie rénové. Mais la rénovation mériterait d'être poussée un peu plus loin.

Attention, bien qu'alimentée par une source d'onsen, la chambre ne dispose pas à proprement parler d'un bain de type onsen comme l'annonce peut le laisser penser. Il s'agit d'une toute petite baignoire dans la salle de bain, que l'on peut remplir avec l'eau de la source. Mais le confort n'est pas au rendez-vous pour ce point-là. Les lits n'étaient pas non plus des futons comme c'était le cas dans d'autres hébergements. Il s'agissait de matelas, celtes un peu plus épais que des futons, mais très étroit. Personnellement j'aurais préféré un futon je crois.
