was in Delhi with a friend for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. Yesterday, after checking in and relaxing for a while, we decided to step out to buy bananas for our early-morning pre-run snack. The area was incredibly crowded, and despite going out to look for them, we returned empty-handed. So, I asked the hotel reception if they could provide us with two bananas. I thought it was a reasonable request, especially since hotels serving breakfast usually have basic fruits like bananas. To my surprise, a staff member asked me to either order them online or check with the restaurant. We went to the restaurant, where I was charged ₹100 for three bananas! I paid and came back because I didn’t want to argue over something so small. I know it’s a minor thing, but I believe these little gestures say a lot about a hotel’s hospitality. Interestingly, the hotel is happy to offer complimentary sweets after lunch and dinner, but when a guest asks for two simple bananas before a marathon, there’s no courtesy to help. It’s not about the money. It’s about the gesture, the thoughtfulness, and the experience you create for your guest.
