Amanaki Thao Dien

From the street, Amanaki Thao Dien looks like a large hotel. It isn't. Most of the building is given over to the lobby, offices, a spa, sauna, pool and gym, which leaves only thirty-some rooms. It is a true boutique hotel. It is also a very design-driven one. The owner clearly wanted to showcase her antiques, eclectic furniture and artwork, and it looks fantastic. This is the opposite of a cookie-cutter chain hotel. That design does come at a price, and the price is practicality. I was there on business for four nights in a Haven room. It was beautiful, but the small work table behind the bed was crowded with an antique lamp and decorative pieces, leaving little room to spread out with a laptop. The balcony is so narrow that one person fills its width, and the bathtub out there is better for photos than for bathing. The hot water also takes a good five minutes to arrive. After the first morning you simply plan for it: turn on the tap, answer a few emails, then shower. The service is what will bring me back. I have never seen housekeeping like this. They don't just clean the room, they organize it — toiletries, clothes, everything — far beyond what we expected. There is a nightly turndown with wonderful pineapple cookies, something you rarely see anymore outside the top luxury hotels. The restaurant next door, where breakfast is served, is excellent. We had dinner there the first night because heavy rain had flooded the road, and we were glad we did. We shared a squid appetizer, then pasta, duck and dessert, with live violin and guitar. It was a wonderful evening. Breakfast quality is very high, though the Western choices are limited. The kitchen happily made eggs for me that were not on the menu. My wife, who is Thai, loved the seafood soups and spicy dishes. The neighborhood is a real plus: restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, doughnut and ice cream places, all within walking distance. Next time I would book a larger room, which they do offer. This hotel is not for everyone. If you want a predictable, practical business room, a chain will serve you better. If you are tired of rooms with no soul, I highly recommend it.
