About this cabin rental

Welcome to Stars Over Stecoah, our three bedroom, three full bathroom cabin in the mountains of western North Carolina. With comfortable sleeping for eight guests, big mountain views, a garage, and a fire pit under the stars, it is an ideal home base for your vacation.

The cabin sits high in the Stecoah Valley between Robbinsville and Bryson City, surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest. It is quiet in a way that surprises people. Two families can share a week here without anyone waiting on a shower, and the evening entertainment is a fire, a sky full of stars, and whatever the owls are doing.

WHAT SETS THIS CABIN APART

Sauna and hot tub. The hot tub sits outside on the lower level, tucked beneath the deck but open to the mountain air. The sauna is indoors and gets used far more than guests expect, especially after a a day of exploring and adventures.

Three full bathrooms for eight guests. Every bedroom has a bath attached or directly across the hall. On a multi-family or multi-generational trip, this is the detail that decides everything.

Big mountain views, framed by forest. A long look across the valley to the mountain on the far side, with the trees close in keeping things private.

Two fireplaces and a fire pit. Indoors and out, for the months when the mountains turn cold.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS — SLEEPS 8

Upstairs

Primary bedroom: king bed, attached full bath
Second bedroom: queen bed, full bath directly across the hall, desk with monitor and docking station

Downstairs

Third bedroom: queen-over-king bunk (sleeps 4), attached full bath

Please note the downstairs bedroom uses a bunk configuration. The upper queen is reached by ladder, which is worth considering when assigning rooms for older guests or small children.

THE SPACE

The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking real meals, not just reheating them, with a charcoal grill outside for the nights that call for it. Two living areas, one upstairs and one downstairs, with fireplaces give a group of eight room to spread out rather than pile onto one couch. There is a foosball table for the competitive members of your party, and a dedicated desk setup with monitor, keyboard, docking station, and webcam if someone needs to steal an hour of work.

Wifi is available throughout. Speeds run around 19 Mbps, which handles streaming and email comfortably.

Self check-in with a smart lock. Arrive when you arrive.

WHAT'S NEARBY

Fontana Lake — 5 miles
Motorcycle rentals — 5 min
Robbinsville — 15 min
Nantahala Outdoor Center — 15 min
Cherohala Skyway — 30min
Bryson City — 25 min
Tail of the Dragon — 30 min
Fly fishing shop — 25 min

Fontana Lake is the closest big water, with 27 miles of shoreline to explore by boat or kayak and Fontana Dam, the tallest dam east of the Rockies, anchoring the far end.

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is one of the largest stands of old-growth forest left in the eastern United States, with tulip poplars over 400 years old and trunks wider than a car. It is an easy walk on a well-maintained loop and consistently the thing guests tell us they did not expect to love.

The Cherohala Skyway climbs to over 5,000 feet on its way to Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with overlooks the whole way. Lake Santeetlah, ringed by national forest on three-quarters of its shoreline, offers some of the cleanest water and quietest paddling in the region.

Bryson City, about 25 minutes out, is the closest town with a full main street: antique shops, bakeries, breweries, and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (with a seasonal Polar Express), which runs scenic excursions through the gorge. The Nantahala Outdoor Center, closer at 15 minutes, runs whitewater rafting, zip lines, and guided hikes. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance is roughly 50 minutes away, with elk viewing, waterfalls, and hundreds of miles of trail.

For riders and drivers, the Tail of the Dragon's 318 curves in 11 miles are 30 minutes out, reached via the Moonshiner 28. The garage gives you somewhere secure and dry to leave your vehicles.

GETTING HERE AND PARKING

The cabin is reached by a gravel mountain road. Most vehicles can make the drive, and we have had guests bring sports cars and motorcycles up without incident, but the road is steep and unpaved and you should be comfortable driving mountain roads before booking.

Four-wheel or all-wheel drive is strongly recommended in winter and during heavy rain.

We are glad to send a video and photos of the full drive so you can judge for yourself. Please ask before you book, or at least while you are still inside your free cancellation window. We would much rather answer questions early than have anyone arrive uncertain.

Guests who decide not to continue up the road after arriving are not eligible for a refund. We share this plainly and in advance so there are no surprises on either side.

Parking for roughly five vehicles, including a garage that holds one car or several motorcycles.

HOW WE GOT OUR NAME

The cabin sits in the Stecoah Valley. The name comes from the Cherokee "Usdi Gohi," meaning "little place." The Cherokee applied it to a number of spots across these mountains; here the words became Stecoah, and it stuck.

As for the stars, you will have to see those for yourself. Best viewed from the fire pit, well after dark, with your head tipped back.

Communication with owners and check in was easy. Gravel street to property was a little daunting for me…thank God there was never oncoming traffic while we were there! Downstairs living area was nice for 3 couples. We took advantage of the hot tub and sauna!
