I recently booked three nights’ accommodation at Charming Blue Mountain Cottages in Katoomba for my wife and daughter. Despite making the booking via Booking.com, which I have used for many years without any issues, I was redirected to AirKeeper – a third-party accommodation management system. For the first time ever, I was required to provide a copy of my driver's licence and the credit card used to pre-pay the accommodation. I reluctantly provided both only to get a follow-up email a week later asking me for the same information again. I contacted AirKeeper by phone to confirm why they required the same information a second time. I was advised that they had had a system issue and the data had been accidentally deleted. Because I had already paid for the accommodation and was within the non-refundable period, I felt I had no choice but to supply the information again. I subsequently received another email from AirKeeper advising me that the information on my driver’s licence didn’t match the names of the people who were booked and requesting that I update the information – again. I have never had this issue with Booking.com despite regularly doing the same thing. As a result of this experience, I will never book any future accommodation if it is managed through AirKeeper. With regard to the accommodation itself, it was also disappointing. The towels and tea towels were old and definitely needed replacing, while the rug under the dining table was dirty and also needs replacing. Both my wife and daughter complained about how difficult it was to sleep with possums making a considerable amount of noise on the metal roof. Their main concern, however, was when they saw a rat running down the hallway of the property. They also saw rat poison behind the washing machine. While the property was within walking distance of both Echo Point and the main street of Katoomba, and the beds and pillows were comfortable, the negatives outweighed the positives for them.
