K's House Nikko - Kinugawa Onsen Hostel

My first ever stay in a hostel. We were late for check-in, and the hotel sent instructions on how to check ourselves in- convenient. The room was good for a single night and having my family along. Didn't use any other facilities.

Was really nice to stay in the lounge with an incredible view. Kitchen had everything you need, everything is extremely clean Lucky to have found this spot

Overall, I had a pleasant stay. The hostel was clean, conveniently located, and had a comfortable atmosphere. It also offered reasonably good value for money. Based on the facilities and environment alone, I would have been happy to recommend it. Unfortunately, my experience at check-in was disappointing. As a foreign resident legally living in Japan, I was asked to present my residence card or another form of identification before I was allowed to check in. As I understand Japanese regulations and common accommodation practices, foreign residents with an address in Japan are generally not required to present a passport, residence card, or other identification simply because they are checking into accommodation. I explained that I was a resident of Japan, but the staff still insisted that I show an additional document bearing my name before allowing me to check in. What disappointed me most was not the request for identification itself, but the apparent inconsistency in how guests were treated. The experience gave me the impression that foreign residents were subject to requirements that may not be imposed on Japanese guests. I hope the management reviews its check-in procedures, provides staff with proper training regarding the relevant rules, and ensures that all guests are treated equally, fairly, and respectfully. 全体としては快適に滞在することができました。館内は清潔で、立地も良く、雰囲気も快適でした。料金を考えるとコストパフォーマンスも十分良く、設備や宿泊環境だけであれば、おすすめできるホステルだと思います。 しかし、チェックイン時の対応には非常に残念な思いをしました。私は日本に適法に居住している外国人ですが、チェックインの際に在留カードやその他の本人確認書類の提示を求められました。 私の理解では、日本国内に住所を有する外国人居住者は、宿泊するだけの理由でパスポートや在留カード、その他の身分証明書の提示を求められる対象ではありません。その旨を説明しましたが、スタッフは名前が記載された別の身分証明書を提示しなければチェックインできないという対応を取りました。 私が残念に感じたのは、本人確認そのものではなく、この対応が日本人宿泊者とは異なるように思えたことです。そのため、外国人居住者だけが異なる扱いを受けているような印象を受けました。 今後は、チェックイン手続きについて関係法令や適切な運用をスタッフへ十分に周知し、すべての宿泊者に対して公平かつ敬意を持った対応をしていただけることを期待しています。
