Nooitgedacht Trout Lodge

Wow, so scenic and beautiful! Such lovely staff.

I wasn’t expecting the hectic 16km dirt road to the property but once there it was worth it.

Nooitgedacht offered the best trout fly fishing we have experienced to date! There are multiple locations to choose to fish from, all very well stocked with primarily Rainbows but also the unique Spekboom Red and the elusive Browns. The location is safe, clean, and very peaceful. The inclusive meals made us feel so spoilt with excellent food prepared by the wonderfully friendly kitchen staff. We felt very much at home while on holiday. We only had one day so we barely scratched the surface of all that Nooitgedacht has to offer but we loved being able to row out to the island in the middle of the lake or to walk along the river. The bird and animal life is amazing - we didn't come across the leopard or bushpig but a porcupine said hello at the lounge door and we glimpsed an otter in the river!

We loved Nooitgedacht but just as an FYI to future guests: the road to the lodge is very long, rocky, and steep in places. Our SUV made it but I would not recommend going with a low car. Drinks are not included, other than water and tea/coffee, and the bar service is pretty basic so bring anything extra along. The rooms are very comfortable but simple and we missed having an extra table to prep our fishing rods and a small bar fridge for some water but as you spend most of your time outdoors and all your meals are prepared at the main house, it's not a big deal. There is spotty wifi at the main house but cell signal is basically non-existent elsewhere on the property, which we loved, but it's good to know beforehand. Finally, be aware that there is a small road tax fee that is not included in your booking price.

The only negative is the long dirt road in..... especially if you are not expecting it!
