Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve

Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve is a 3,000-hectare sanctuary in the heart of the Eastern Free State, nestled beneath the spectacular Korannaberg Mountains near Ficksburg. Known for its horseback riding, hiking and abundant wildlife, it offers a wonderfully secluded escape in the South African countryside. We had a fantastic short stay here, with one of the highlights being a fascinating drive around the property with the owner, Willie Nel. He shared the incredible story of how, over the past 50 years, he has transformed and conserved the land, gradually returning it from cash-crop farming to its natural grasslands. It is a remarkable story of land restoration and a real testament to his vision and commitment. The reserve is teeming with wildlife, and the walks around the property are fantastic. There are also multiple locations where fresh spring water bubbles naturally from the ground, adding to the sense that this is a truly special and untouched part of South Africa. Moolmanshoek is also home to around 360 horses, including beautiful Arabians and the hardier traditional Boerperde. For anyone who loves horse riding, this is definitely a place to visit, with wonderful trails and an impressive equestrian facility. A truly memorable stay in a very special part of the country. We hope to return one day!
