We really enjoyed the morning picnic on Mt Wakakusa with the deer and the yummy traditional bento's. The room was very spacious and had both a traditional low set table and a more western little table for the window view. They allow tattoos in their onsen which is a refreshing change to most ryokan stays. Cool souvenir shop that sells the deer crackers literally right next door. Very easy walk down to Kasuga Taisha and there is of course deer just milling about around the hotel and not far too the main park areas to interact with and feed them. Staff were incredibly attentive and kind, they bring you afternoon snacks and make up the futons and rearrange the table to the center of the room for meals in the room. They keep your shoes in special lockers as you only wear slippers in the ryokan and will dry umbrellas that get wet. They spoke minimal english but they always make sure to go above and beyond and work with you to help any language barriers.
Didn't love that there was no shower in our room, it was our fault for not realising it was a private toilet but shared bathing/showering situation. Wasn't the easiest place to get too without taking a taxi but we did expect that. If you're really introverted the level of service might make you uncomfortable.

- The food, very artistically crafted and beautifully served. If you are not a fish person you might struggle, there's a lot of raw /strongly flavoured fish dishes. - The environment. You can walk straight into the Kasuga Forest, it's very peaceful and surrounded by pristine nature. - The staff were very friendly, but please be aware that they speak very little English, so knowing some Japanese would be very helpful.
- Very late check-in time. In our other accommodations, we were always able to check-in before the quoted time if the room was ready before. Here we were unable to check in until the exact time quoted, so we didn't feel like we had much time to enjoy the place. - Lack of privacy. If you are expecting an experience like a hotel, then this is not the right place for you. The staff constantly come in and out of your room to set tables, serve courses of the meal and set up the futon beds, then they come in early in the morning to wake you up and remove the futon beds. It's not relaxing at all. - No private shower facilities. If you're a gaijin like me, you might be shocked by the lack of a private shower, but I guess I should have done my homework more. There is only a public shower and onsen here, so if you don't feel comfortable baring it all in front of strangers, then this may not be the right place for you
