About this house rental

Three bed roomed detached house situated yards from the shore of Loch Carloway (Sea loch). Recently renovated, it is in the perfect position on the West Coast of the Island to visit such historical sites as the Callanish Standing Stones and the Carloway Broch. Also in the village are the world renowned Garenin Black Houses which give an indication as to how Islanders lived in days gone bye. There are two fantastic beaches (Dalmore and Dalbeg) within 5 minutes drive and some stunning inland and coastal walks accessible from the property. There are many trout lochs in the locality and Salmon fishing on the Carloway River (Permits available from Carloway Angling Club). Sea angling, beach fishing and pier fishing are also popular activities.

The property has recently been refurbished with a new kitchen, bathroom, new wooden flooring and carpets throughout. There are 2 double bedrooms, one with a double bed the other with two singles. A third bedroom has bunk beds ideally suited for children. A cot is also available.

There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available

Other things to note

When booking it is essential to check that if you are bringing a car that there is space on the ferry as in Summer they tend to be well booked.

There is no shop or petrol station in Carloway. The closest are either at Barvas or Cameron Terrace/Leurbost where you can get a good selection of food, wines and spirits and both have
petrol/diesel. They also carry a diverse range of other goods – from midge repellent. There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available and fishing gear to surf equipment (Barvas). In Stornoway there are two supermarkets – Tesco near the ferry terminal and the Coop on the way out of town toward the west side.

The Doune Braes Hotel provides meals (best to book) and takeaway food. It has a bar and lounge. Forty North (Bragar) does the same but you need to pre-order takeaway and collect. Menus for both Doune Braes and Forty North are in the folder but may be subject to change.

There is of course a wide selection of restaurants in Stornoway - An Lanntair has a top class chef in Kenny Mackay and Digby Chick is recommended. Don’t go past Cameron’s fish and chip shop without sampling!

Getting around

A car is essential

Ferry:
Most people travel to Lewis by sea using Caledonian McBrayne. They operate twice daily services from Ullapool to Stornoway, or alternatively they operate a shorter ferry crossing between Uig (Isle of Skye) and Tarbert (Harris). The Ferry fares are really competitive as opposed to flying and hiring a car.

Carloway is about 24 miles from Stornoway, and about 45 miles from Tarbert. Follow signs for Càrlabhagh (Carloway) on the A858. Remember to look out for the Gaelic name on road signs. When you reach Carloway you pass over the only flyover in the Western Isles and turn hard left heading for the pier signposted Cidhe Càrlabhagh. Follow the road to the right and it is the last house on the right with a distinctive red garage door

Flying:
The only airport on the island is in Stornoway . Flybe operate daily flights to Stornoway from Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Eastern Airways operate flights, Monday to Friday, to Stornoway from Aberdeen.

Car Hire:
There are a number of car hire companies including Stornoway car hire, Lewis Car Rental and Isle of Harris car hire.
