I’d give it a solid 8 for the great communication with the staff in English before my arrival and during check-in, as well as the clean linens in the room. The hostel itself has probably seen better days, but I was aware of that when I booked it. It was a budget option—a room with a shared bathroom—during our solar eclipse trip, and it served its purpose 100 percent. Unfortunately, we had to head back in the morning to catch the train to Barcelona, so we didn’t get to explore Balaguer itself with its majestic castle on the hill—but it’s impressive just from a distance.
The room furnishings were a bit worn, and the main light didn’t work. The shower in the shared bathroom leaked onto the floor, so everyone had to mop the floor after showering.
