Château de Contay Guesthouse - 1753

We could not have wished for a more magical way to end our honeymoon. This breathtaking château exceeded every expectation - and then some. Ann made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived, showing us around and then surprising us with homemade elderflower and meringue on the patio. Having the whole house to ourselves for the night felt like the most wonderful treat. We wandered through the beautiful downstairs rooms, soaking up the history and original features, and explored the grounds where we were charmed by the resident peacock and sheep. Our bedroom was cosy and comfortable, and we slept so well. Ann's breakfast the next morning was truly exceptional everything fresh and homemade, with local apple juice, and so many lovely options. It was the perfect final chapter to our honeymoon, and we are already looking forward to coming back.

No aircon or fan in room on a 40C day

Good location and pleasant property. They were good about us forgetting to pay when we left.

The host just stopped short of rolling her eyes when she asked if we spoke French (her first question). I did Duolingo for a year and I'm not confident speaking especially under this sort of pressure. She used Google translate on her phone, but I could understand what she was saying as I recognised words so in fact my French was better than her English! She also gesticulated wildly almost shouting at us when we drove the car in front of the house when returning from our evening meal. It's not clear what's part of the place or parking when you arrive, it's on the left before you turn into the front of the house. This really upset me and I had a little cry that night, I didn't want to stay there anymore, but we were stuck. The room was nice, but no kettle or coffee machine (You have to go downstairs to a little pantry and get it). Also so no cooling system or fans and it was boiling. Breakfast was around a table with everyone else who were all friendly, luckily at 9am. It was limited to yogurt, granola, bread, cheese, pastries and some peaches. The host brought coffee cup by cup. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I didn't like this experience and wouldn't recommend on that basis. My husband booked it. We were visiting WW1 sites and heading on to Reims and Verdun.
