The staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean. Bathroom was nice. Sometimes we did not get hot water.

The hotel is in an ex-mental hospital & the staff do their best to maintain the insane asylum experience for guests. The front door is padlocked in the morning, so you have to wait for staff if you want to leave at 9am. The rooms are unchanged from the previous hospital, with one bare fluorescent lightbulb over the bed, so you can't relax in the room. Yet the hallways have nice warm orange lightbulbs? Freezing rooms, with no heating & only the thin hospital bedsheet & blanket. The hospital warden was kind enough to bring extra blankets, but I still didn't sleep because I was shivering. The bathrooms also had the harsh bright fluorescent lightbulb; hard to use the toilet at night without blinding yourself. It always smelled like either raw fish or eggs. No hot water tap for the sink, no hot water for the shower. I turned the hot shower tap on, put shampoo in my hair (they don't have soap) & a few seconds later the water turned off entirely. I had to wash it out with ice cold water. I didn't bother showering again. Guests are not allowed. When I checked out, my friend came to help take my bags down the 7 flights of stairs as I have a back injury. I stood on the stairs with my bags in view of the prison warden. Despite explaining to her in Spanish that my friend just needed to get my bags, she would not allow it. I asked her to help me then, but she said no. So I painfully carried my bags down 2 flights of steps. Finally after 15 min of punishment, she let my friend do it.

I lasted one night of my 6 night booking. This place is SPARTAN. No ceiling or other fan, no air of any kind in the entire building. No chair, bedside table or bedside lamp, just a bare bulb on the ceiling. Bed was extremely uncomfortable. I truly felt like I I was sleeping in a prison cell. The entire property smelled of sewer gas. WiFi was unusable it was so slow. I’m not a stranger to hostels and roughing it a bit but this was comically bad. Do not stay here.

Great staff, very clean, loved roof top, free water and coffee

I spent 9 nights, having booked a single room with a shared bathroom. I had been to Oaxaca many times, but never in November. At Andaina, I had a room on the 2nd floor aka Nivel 1. The room was EXTREMELY cold, and not getting any sun. Also, it was too close to the front desk and its constant noises. Getting a room on Nivel 2 or 3 would have been a lot more enjoyable for a long stay. The roof top provides a great view of the city and the mountains. The shared kitchen is a great addition to the hostel which provides, free of charge, drinkable water and delicious coffee. The hostel was extremely clean thanks to a hard working crew. I complained to a manager about one of the employees,l who works the front desk. A COMPLETE lack of manners and education was displayed by that young man. I asked the manager to coach him, hoping for a change. Unfortunately, no signs of better customer service and manners were shown during the rest of my stay. That young man shouldn't be working behind a desk dealing with an international clientele. I will give only 3 stars because of him. Otherwise, my rating would have been higher.

This Hostal is very quiet! It’s clean and good for your money. Staff are very helpful. There are 24 hours front desk personnel so you feel safe! It will be great if the Hostal allow a bit drinking on the site. I think this will bring more customers to the Hostal!
