The staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean. Bathroom was nice. Sometimes we did not get hot water.

The hotel is in an ex-mental hospital & the staff do their best to maintain the insane asylum experience for guests.
The front door is padlocked in the morning, so you have to wait for staff if you want to leave at 9am.
The rooms are unchanged from the previous hospital, with one bare fluorescent lightbulb over the bed, so you can't relax in the room. Yet the hallways have nice warm orange lightbulbs? Freezing rooms, with no heating & only the thin hospital bedsheet & blanket. The hospital warden was kind enough to bring extra blankets, but I still didn't sleep because I was shivering.
The bathrooms also had the harsh bright fluorescent lightbulb; hard to use the toilet at night without blinding yourself. It always smelled like either raw fish or eggs.
No hot water tap for the sink, no hot water for the shower. I turned the hot shower tap on, put shampoo in my hair (they don't have soap) & a few seconds later the water turned off entirely. I had to wash it out with ice cold water. I didn't bother showering again.
Guests are not allowed. When I checked out, my friend came to help take my bags down the 7 flights of stairs as I have a back injury. I stood on the stairs with my bags in view of the prison warden. Despite explaining to her in Spanish that my friend just needed to get my bags, she would not allow it. I asked her to help me then, but she said no. So I painfully carried my bags down 2 flights of steps. Finally after 15 min of punishment, she let my friend do it.

I lasted one night of my 6 night booking. This place is SPARTAN. No ceiling or other fan, no air of any kind in the entire building. No chair, bedside table or bedside lamp, just a bare bulb on the ceiling. Bed was extremely uncomfortable. I truly felt like I I was sleeping in a prison cell. The entire property smelled of sewer gas. WiFi was unusable it was so slow.
I’m not a stranger to hostels and roughing it a bit but this was comically bad. Do not stay here.

Great staff, very clean, loved roof top, free water and coffee

I spent 9 nights, having booked a single room with a shared bathroom. I had been to Oaxaca many times, but never in November.
At Andaina, I had a room on the 2nd floor aka Nivel 1. The room was EXTREMELY cold, and not getting any sun. Also, it was too close to the front desk and its constant noises.
Getting a room on Nivel 2 or 3 would have been a lot more enjoyable for a long stay.
The roof top provides a great view of the city and the mountains. The shared kitchen is a great addition to the hostel which provides, free of charge, drinkable water and delicious coffee.
The hostel was extremely clean thanks to a hard working crew.
I complained to a manager about one of the employees,l who works the front desk.
A COMPLETE lack of manners and education was displayed by that young man. I asked the manager to coach him, hoping for a change.
Unfortunately, no signs of better customer service and manners were shown during the rest of my stay.
That young man shouldn't be working behind a desk dealing with an international clientele.
I will give only 3 stars because of him.
Otherwise, my rating would have been higher.

This Hostal is very quiet! It’s clean and good for your money. Staff are very helpful. There are 24 hours front desk personnel so you feel safe! It will be great if the Hostal allow a bit drinking on the site. I think this will bring more customers to the Hostal!

Staff are very friendly and helpful! The hostel is very quiet compared to the other hostels, clean and good for the money spent! I’d you want to party with friends, this is not a hotel for you as party and alcoholic drinks are not allowed!

This hostel is very centrally located, yet it was quiet enough for me to sleep well at night. It's very clean and the bed is comfortable. I love that they provide drinking water!! The only thing I would change is to make sure residents understand which bathrooms have hot water and which ones don't (some have solar heated water that can be quite chilly). Oh, and put thicker curtains on the window to keep out the light from the hallway.

It was adequate…clean, comfortable, hot showers, wifi on lower levels only.

Great that I had a single bed in room to myself in a Hostel. Big bonus that.

Central, easy access everywhere. Hostel staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

The stay was cheap and the room and areas where large and clean.
However comfort overall was low. Beds were hard as a brick and there are a lot of noise from traffic during the day and in the mornings, which not even ear plugs can block out (which might be a general thing in Oaxaca centro), so just be aware.

The location is really good, very central. Huge hostel, it has so many floors and different spaces. Lovely rooftop. You have to climb lots of flights of stairs to reach the kitchen but it has good facilities. NO LAUNDRY SERVICE despite saying it has, but the launderette is around the corner and very cheap. The hostel is really clean and we appreciated that.

Quiet hostel, really enjoyed my private room for an excellent prize. Great rooftop with almost 360° views of Oaxaca!

Excellent location right in the city centre; spacious rooms with ample storage space; friendly staff - especially the chap in the mornings :) clean, atmospheric and with a great roof top terrace. Definitely a place to return to!

Loved the coffee and water 24hrs. Loved my room and the upstairs deck. Staff was very nice. Location was awesome. Only negative was the kitchen wasn't sufficient for number of rooms and the refrigerator was too warm and my food spoiled. They think they are saving money. Eat in the street, it's wonderful, cheaper and you can find some great cheap restaurants.

My room was perfect for me -quiet, very large, very clean, comfy bed. The staff was nice and kept the coffee pot full and the water jug too. Great top deck for fresh air and coffee in the morning. Awesome location. The shared kitchen is the weak point. They only had two forks so I went next door and bought some, problem solved. The refrigerator is barely cool, typical in South America. They think it saves money. They desperately need four more burners. Only two people can cook at once but there is so much good food here in the street it is really not a big problem. I would kill for an ice machine. Overall though I will stay here again if I can get back to Oaxaca. Very good!

Clean, good location, great price

The rooms are very basic, however, they are private rooms, located 3 blocks from the zocalo and they keep everything very clean. Bathrooms are cleaned and stocked throughout the day rather than only once or twice. The ratio of bathrooms and showers to rooms was appropriate and the staff are helpful and friendly.

Amazing rooftop, great prices, and lots of common space. Not the most social but that was ok for us - may matter more for you.
8.0 / 10.0
The rooms were clean and the location was excellent if you want to shop you walk out the door and your at the markets are 50 metres away. The more historical areas are more of a walk but overall great for the price.

Very central located, the room was very clean, the place is a bit old and basic but definitely recommended and a good value for money. Great roof top and balcony and nice extras like free water and coffee and tiny gym.

Great location and very quiet for such a large property. Not your traditional backpacker hostel.

These are very simple accommodations, but perfect for the price. Everything was clean and well maintained. The wi-fi worked well throughout my stay. There's a nice patio area, plenty of water, a kitchen. They lock the door after 10pm for security, but there's staff on site 24/7. For a budget stay close to the Zocalo, I would definitely recommend Hostel Andaina!

Great staff, clean and large room and common spaces. Close to the action and nice rooftop area. Hot water took some time to come through the shower but it's summer anyway.
