    Nothing really wrong with the place itself, but the beach and Koh Mak itself is a place for foreigners. The beach is littered and sand flies will eat you alive. Note to everyone: Koh Mak is notorious for its sand flies, along with Koh Chang and Koh Kood. That said, the rooms are very nice but breakfast is separate and quite expensive. You are better off drinking instant coffee (which is not even included in the room, although there is a kettle and cups). The restaurant is closed at night, though there are plenty restaurants around out on the street. I've seen many beaches on many islands in Thailand and this one is nothing special compared to others. One thing I will say is that it's a pretty quiet place, if that is what you are looking for, but bring a gallon of DEET to fight off those pesky sand flies.

    Unfortunately, our stay was very disappointing and did not match what was advertised or promised. I understand that this is a tropical location and that some bugs are to be expected. That said, what we experienced went far beyond that. Our room had a serious ant infestation — not just a few ants, but three different species, and they were relentless throughout our stay. This made the room feel unclean and uncomfortable. We were given the worst room on the property, located right next to reception and the car park, with constant foot traffic passing by. This was especially frustrating as the hotel presents itself as a beachfront experience, which we did not get at all. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. Even the smallest movement from one person caused the other to be jolted awake, and the sheets felt low quality and unpleasant. On top of this, the front desk staff were rude and unwelcoming, and gave the impression that they were irritated by guests rather than there to help. Any concerns we raised were met with indifference rather than solutions. Overall, between the room location, cleanliness issues, uncomfortable bed, and poor service, we did not enjoy our stay and would not return.
