HISTORY OF THE HOUSE: Abraham Somes III, grandson, and namesake to the first permanent settler on Mt Desert Island, was the original owner of Willowbrook. He lived there with his wife Adeline Freeman Somes. Abraham was a well-respected shipbuilder and traveled to the West Indies, New Haven, Boston, and Portland. This historic home was once rented to the poet Elinor Wylie and also to Thomas Berger, author of “Little Big Man.” Until its recent sale in 2022, the home remained in the Somes family and was well-loved by those who had the fortune of being in residence, either year-round or seasonally.

Definitely lacking cleaning supplies in kitchen, i.e. no WIndex or cleaner for counters; no dish soap; only one roll of paper towels, only 5 dishwasher pods for 7 day stay. Surprised that there were no placemats for dining table. The pillows definitely need to be replaced in all bedrooms. In the bedroom that I was in they didn’t even match. The bathroom rugs were awful -don’t know how often they are cleaned. My suggestion is that you have two sets of sheets for every bed two sets of towels - that way cleaning crew could immediately makes beds, clean bathrooms and then take sheets/towels to laundromat and wash & dry everything more efficiently. Could never get heat to work in upstairs bedroom with double & single bed. It was sufficient for our party of nine but we wouldn’t rent again.

The house provides plenty of space for a large group to have plenty of room although some modern amenities were certainly missed. A larger TV, better lights and some cleaning supplies i e.vacuum would be great especially with a large group and a pet. We had a great time and enjoyed our stay but the older home has a musty smell and we came across a few bugs during the stay. All in all I would recommend this property if you have a large group and will be out of the house exploring a lot.Thank you againThe Marshall family.

Amazing historic home. Perfect for our girls trip of 7. Proximity to the work, Bar Harbor as well as the rest of the island is absolutely perfect. Views from the porch are stellar, we only wanted for more chairs on the proch.

The arrival to the property is so easy from Bangor airport. I have been to Mt Desert Island many times over the last 60 years, so I’ve learned to stay on the Quiet Side. And Somesville is my favorite place on the island anyway! The home is comfortable and seems to lack any essential. With nine of us we provided extra TP and paper towels. We were all comfortable with our chosen bedrooms, and once the showers were figured out all was good. We would most definitely consider renting Willowbrook when we return. Loved it!!! Thank you, owners, for sharing your treasure.
