The Pounti

I can't tell you what a wonderful stay this was. Firstly, Toula was out of town. I'd read that her breakfasts were amazing but unfortunately my stay would be on a room only basis. This really wasn't an issue as the hotel is a short walk to the village square where there is a whole host of cafe's to choose from. Mr Costa was an exceptional host and really made me feel welcome. Such a lovely kind man who really looked after me. The hotel itself is absolutely out of this world. It is clear that a lot of care and attention has gone into curating beautiful pieces of antique furniture and art to complement this gorgeous medieval house. I can't rate it highly enough and honestly hope to be back one day!

Toula, the owner, is such a gracious host. I parked in a town lot a distance from the hotel, and she insisted on walking with me to my car to show me where I could park closer to the hotel. When I settled in, she brought a tray of traditional local items (mastic gum, a local sweet, local mastic liqueur, and a small bag of chunks of mastic resin. The room itself was carefully restored to incorporate historical colors and designs- even the painted design on the ceiling. It was quiet and comfortable with a view over the lane below. Toula showed me to the roof-top terrace areas, and explained how, in ancient times, towers in the region were used to warn villagers of pirate attacks and give them time to get to the safety of the walled village. Breakfast was another treat; Toula provided all the elements of a traditional Greek breakfast, and even wrapped some up for me to have later in the day. When asked about the building itself, Toula happily explained how a family would have lived with their animals in a traditional home such as the Pounti.

Even with Google directions, it was a challenge locating the hotel. It is just off the central square, and taverna owner showed me how to find it. I suggest downloading clear walking directions to the hotel prior to arrival in town or asking a helpful local.

The hostess was extremely friendly and the breakfast was fantastic.
