We stayed at Pelican Bay Beach Resort on South Water Caye for five nights (January 3–8), booked months in advance. One month before our trip, we were informed of a mandatory $350 USD per person transfer fee, totaling $700 for a short 14-mile round-trip boat ride to and from Dangriga. As first-time visitors to Belize, we trusted this was standard pricing. It absolutely is not.
Once in Belize, we learned this charge was grossly inflated. For comparison, we booked full-day excursions for $240 total that traveled much farther and included snorkeling, fishing, island hopping, and a freshly cooked lunch.
The late notice left us with no reasonable opportunity to find alternatives. When we asked if we could be dropped in Hopkins instead of Dangriga—which is closer and would have reduced our transportation costs—the manager was dismissive and refused, incorrectly claiming it was “in the opposite direction.”
In addition, we paid $250 for airport transport to Dangriga, yet only $180 from Hopkins to the airport, despite Hopkins being farther away. Altogether, we spent $950 on transportation alone, which felt deliberately exploitative.
While the island itself is beautiful and German was a fantastic tour guide, the resort’s transportation practices left us feeling misled and taken advantage of. Because of this, we would not return and urge future guests to carefully question all transfer costs before booking.

Tessie and her staff went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible, despite the awful weather! They were very accommodating regarding meals and happy to make changes to the set menus where possible. When the internet went down and we needed to confirm our onward travel plans Tessie was happy to help. The resort is set on a tiny island so when the rain started and our plans for snorkelling and boat trips were cancelled we were glad to have access to lots of books and board games to keep us occupied. The homemade biscuits were a great treat in the afternoon and the food was generally very good.
The weather!

The view was beautiful.
Jillian was very nice and tried to work with us to find kid food options as not many. She also helped arrange a boat to take us back early. Steep $600 price tag for total boat transfer.
Not a great stay for families. Pictures are misleading! They look gorgeous but facilities really doesn’t look like it at all. Rooms are sparse and run down. Rusted and paint peeling. There was mold in the shower and a push pedal toilet. We were told to take a shower turning the water off while you soaped up. We would have been better off camping. Part of the island has abandoned structures. It seemed like a scene from Percy Jackson waiting for some creature to pop out. The island is super small. No place to really even walk around. It was a really hot time of year and no AC. The hostess said they give extra fans on hot nights. It was over 100’ so I am not sure how hot it has to be for an extra fan. Options for kids were nil. Corn hole with bean bags falling apart. One bucket and one shovel to play in the sand but the shovel handle was broken. Kayaking and paddle boarding but in only a super small area. They did have snorkeling trips, but over priced. $70 for an 1.5 hours. The food….. ug! Set menu and no options. Take it or leave it. Food was heavy such a pull pork tocos or an overcooked burger and frankly just barely edible. No modification choice. We stayed one night and asked to leave. I am sad that we chose this place as we wasted a family vacation, money and had to scramble for another place to stay during a busy time. We have travelled extensively and have been to spartan accommodations, but this was the worst.

The place is beautiful, snorkelling in coral about 100m off the beach, the food is good and the rooms are simple but comfortable. the staff are also really great, the are mostly young lads who have a great sense of humour
The property is a 45min boat journey from Dangriga and the owners charge an extortionate fee to transfer you to the island, my experience has been tainted somewhat because after leaving I have ended up having a heated discussion about this with the property owner, and I would advise anyone booking to understand that there will be a large cost to transfer you to the Island, which is not listed on booking.com currently
The owner initially quoted me $600 for the transfer, I discussed with them and they lowered it to $400, but while I was there, other guests had paid $320. It is a 45min transfer and they charge guests to restock the island. The owner send some questionable messages and justifications when I asked about this cost
The boats are owned by the hotel and go daily to take food and water to the island
Overall this affected my experience, the island is great, the staff are great, the food is great, but the management will take advantage if they can, so just be wary about the cost of the transfer when booking as it isn’t clearly in the policies and it’s a large extra cost

very relaxing and beautiful island. the staff is great.
-at breakfast you choose between salty or sweet. both choices are very small and the fruit plate is ridiculous. Lunch is supposed to be a "light meal" but we got unhealthy dishes (pork tacos, beef fajitas) in small portions. No salad, fruit etc. For dinner you can only choose between meat or fish/shrimps, everything else is set.
- the boat transfer is not privat. They transport goods and people, but you pay the trip. no water or anything for guests on board.

The island is tranquil and absolutely stunning. The cottages were comfortable and had amazing views. The staff were all incredible and so very accommodating to make us feel special and taken care of. Thank you Byron, Albin, Mello, Mike Susanna, Destiny and everyone else who we unfortunately did not the the names.
Midstay we asked for another cottage (Kingfisher) since visitors had left and the staff helped arrange it immediately. and we also met the dogs and the cat. The highlight of the trip were the day trips with Captains Albin and Mello. They took us snorkeling (day and night), bird watching and swimming at gorgeous reefs and settings. The food was served fresh every day and we never got the same things twice. Lots of fresh seafood and local flavors. The private beach is the most amazing place and so peaceful and there were kayaks and paddle boards for our use. There is a reef right off the southern tip in which we swam with many kinds of fishes, stingrays, star fish, blow fish, crabs, lobster - you name it! The water is crystal clear and shifts in turquoise and blues and just sparkles and shimmers. The water is not as salty as expected which we liked and it has a very comfortable temperature. This vacation was so one none of us will forget and when real life back home gets stressful I will simply think back to South Water Caye. We will for sure come back soon again.
Nothing to not like. We loved everything!

Paradisiac island with an amazing host, Rebecca
Very friendly staff, particularly Mark that was expert on cocktails
Flexible adjusting to food specifications
Night snorkeling with Ben
Way over priced considering the choice of food you have and the hotel facilities (very limited food options, zero alcoholic beverages included on the high price and not even beach mats for all the guest)

nice little island the Pelican Beach Resort shares with 2 other resorts. The island is ideal for snorkeling, kayaking (the resort offers the respective equipment) or simply relaxing in a hammock under the coconut palms. the staff is super friendly and helpful.
accommodations (rooms/bungalows) and food are functional/good but way over-priced for the steep price tag of USD 500/night. However, what did not go down well for us was the additional boat transfer charge of USD 400 from Dangriga to the South Water Caye and back (30-45 min. each way) which is excessive and was not mentioned in the booking information.
