Perfect little studio for visiting ancient Gortyna! Well equipped and cozy decoration.

If you want a closer look at Ancient Gortyna staying overnight at the Ancient Gortyna Home bed & breakfast is highly recommended. The B&B is in the village Mitropolis only a few hundred meters from the entrance to the Ancient Gortyna archaeological site. The B&B is also a taverna. The setting is perfect and the food excellent. Furthermore, prices are good, and service is outstanding. My wife and I stayed at the B&B and had three meals at the taverna – lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast the next morning. For dinner we shared garlic bread, a Greek salad, and a dish of stuffed eggplant, Papoutsakia. All was delicious. We had house wine with the meal. A glass of white as a starter and a jug of red with the eggplant. The hostess was helpful and friendly and explained that her father supplied the meat and the wine and her brothers the vegetables. I am sure the taverna and b&b has been with her family since ancient times. When you walk from the B&B towards the official Ancient Gortyna site you will pass some excavations on both sides of the road and if you walk a hundred meters further you will see a wooden sign on the right-hand side of the road saying PRAETORIUM. The sign points to a path which will lead you to the most recent excavations a few hundred meters from the road. The sites are protected behind a fence, but from the path you still get a good impression of the richness of significant remains from Ancient Gortyna. Other remains are scattered on the ground in the vast olive field. Much of the area has not been excavated. Metropolis is the Greek word for big city. I believe that the modern village has the name Mitropolis as a reference to the ancient city. In Roman times Gortyna had over 100,000 inhabitants. Ancient Gortyna and the village of Mitropolis are well worth an extended visit – and if you need food or a place to stay the Ancient Gortyna taverna and B&B will serve you well.

The host is exceptionally friendly and helpful, but also very discreet. The location offers the possibility to explore many nearby villages/places of extraordinary beauty. The house is very cozy and clean with all the facilities and comforts travelers might need. We also had the chance to have an unforgettable lunch at the Ancient Gortyna restaurant which is next to the house - amazing traditional Cretan food and wine !!

Good base for sightseeing. Pleasant host. Taverna on site. No problems at all.
