Welcome to "Made in the shade" a rustic Folly Beach duplex cottage with heaps of charm. Just steps from the beach, this secluded property is nestled in a jungle of live oak trees on a quiet lot east of Center Street. Perfect for two small families, extended family & friends, or teenage kids who need a little private space. Soak in the 500 gallon hot tub under the live oaks! We updated this charming bungalow in 2022 to share with family and friends. As long time short term rental hosts and avid travelers, we strive to provide the same great experience that we would want in a rental property. "Made in the Shade" is perfect for a larger family or a few friends looking for an authentic Folly Beach getaway. This is intended to be a property for families- there are only 3 bedrooms and 2 baths (on septic) so it is not appropriate for parties, weddings, bachelorettes, or large groups.
The property is very private and secluded, but only steps (200m) from the beach and 1.2 miles to the hustle and bustle of Center Street a 10-minute bike ride, or 30-minute walk. There are essentially two separate apartments sharing a large back yard, massive deck with our 'spa shack' (an outdoor clawfoot soaking tub + outdoor shower), a large hot tub (seats 4) and two separate screen porch areas- perfect for meals, games, and happy hour.
The larger main half features a kitchen with granite countertops and stainless appliances and living area with 60" 4K Smart TV ready for your subscriptions (no cable). Sleeping accommodations include the master bedroom with luxurious Cali King Brooklyn Bedding Semi-firm mattress in the master suite and an efficiency bonus room with a queen bed, and two additional sleeper sofas (one in the sunroom, and one in the living room) with linens and pillows are perfect for the kids.
The smaller efficiency side is perfect for teenage kids, parents, or friends who want a little privacy or a different schedule. "Lil Shady" features a 44" smart TV with queen size pull-out sofa, window AC + space heaters (no central), and a premium queen bed with a semi-firm memory foam mattress. Both units are included in this rental, please note the bedrooms do not connect and require a few steps outside.
The house comes furnished with a fully stocked kitchen (with some cooking staples and condiments) and linens for the three sleeper sofas. Altogether 1 King Bed, 2 Queen Beds, and 3 sleeper sofas. A great spot for a multi-generational family or group of friends looking for authentic Folly Beach charm and private, full-size property at a reasonable nightly rate.
Our goal was to create a super relaxing space to share with our family and friends. Guests love that we are just two 'skinny blocks' from the beach (500 ft.), and only four blocks to the bars and restaurants of Center Street. Please note this is an older circa 1940 beach bungalow, not a luxury accommodation for guests with delicate sensibilities. Please keep that in mind when you book and leave reviews.
Common Questions:
- What is your refund policy? Please review the reservation terms and cancellation policies carefully, as we do not provide refunds for hurricanes (unless mandatory evacuation), travel delays, or other emergency circumstances. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance through VRBO or a trusted third-party provider to protect your trip.
- How close to the beach? There is a public beach access two houses over, requiring that you walk across two 'skinny blocks' to get to a beautiful public beach- about 500 feet.
- Do you provide towels and linens? Yes! Bath towels and bed linens are included, but please bring your own beach towels, blankets, and tapestries!
- Do you provide beach towels? No, please bring your own. Our housekeeping team does a fantastic job cleaning and providing supplies but you will need to bring your own beach towels, beach blankets, tapestries, chairs etc for your beach hang outs. Please do not take our blankets, towels, sheets etc. out on the beach for any reason.
- Can we cook? Yes! There is a range, stainless appliances, and a full set of knives, pots, pans and cookware.
-Whats the coffee maker situation? There is a Mr. Coffee drip pot as well as a large french press for the coffee snobs.
-Why are the fees/cost so high? We know, it's gotten ridiculous. It didn't used to be this bad, and we're sorry. Believe me, we don't receive any of those and get hit just as hard as the owners. Rates/minimum stays are seasonal and as much as 3x higher during popular summer times and weekends. We actually cover a portion of our housekeeping cost, because they do an amazing job and are the best we've found. My wife and I personally mange every booking to break even at the end of the year (factoring in coastal insurance, flood, property tax, charleston county accommodations tax, folly beach accommodation tax, STR license tax, business license tax, mortgage, water, electric, wifi, groundskeeping, supplies, cleaning and never-ending maintenance on this 1940's cottage).
- Can we check-in early? Probably not! Please don't show up early. Are you sure? YES. Please don't show up early and watch us clean.
- How do I turn on the party lights?? The party switch is by the desk in the living room. Enjoy!

Overall we had no issues. Bed was comfy..plenty of privacy. Outside needs some updating and cleaning. Enjoyed the hottub and tubs immensely. If however anyone in your group has mobility issues this is not the place. All the floors are uneven..major trip hazards in kitchen and bathroom.. i realize its an older place and at the beach...but for the price i expected better.

Had a great long weekend with our family and our kids’ friends. Room for everyone, great front yard to toss the football and awesome backyard with hot tub. Would definitely stay again.

Perfect place for 2 couples. Well maintained and Andy was a wonderful host and very responsive. Folly Beach has a lot of things to do. Overall, a great experience and will definitely be back!
