Le Cocardier

Michael was the ideal host from the very first moment — which, in my case, was late in the evening after my Paris-to-Montpellier flight arrived several hours behind schedule. He met me without complaint and with genuine warmth. That set the tone for six weeks of easy, friction-free communication throughout my stay. I came to Montpellier looking for a long-term lease and needed a comfortable base while I searched. Michael's apartment was exactly that — and considerably more. The one-bedroom flat is generously sized, furnished in an eclectic style that suited me perfectly: dining table and chairs, a living room with sofa and oversized armchairs, a separate bathroom with tub, and a toilet in its own room. But the real discovery was the large shaded balcony off the living room, reached through sliding glass doors. Quiet, planted, and looking out over Montpellier rooftops with the Château d'eau du Peyrou visible against evening skies that turn pink and purple in the hour before dark. I wrote most of my book from that balcony. It became my favourite room in the apartment. A minute down the block is Chaptal Point Chaud, a boulangerie run by Mohamed and twin brother Sala, who are genuinely one of the friendliest people I encountered in Montpellier. I had tea with them on several occasions. Their pain au chocolat, paninis, sandwiches, and fresh-squeezed orange juice are all excellent. Four minutes in the other direction on Blvd Renouvier, is Des Rêves et du Pain, another great artisan boulanger. On Georges Clemenceau is Atelier Gourmand, a takeout-only boulangerie equally worth knowing. There are three more boulangeries on Cours Gambetta on the way to Les Arceaux — I ran out of weeks before I could work through them all. Three grocery stores are within easy walking distance: Carrefour on Cours Gambetta at seven minutes, Intermarché at six minutes (my personal favourite), and Lidl at eight. Highly recommended, without hesitation.
