breakfast was good
disappointing experience : unfriendly staff, poor service, and overpriced, underwhelming food.
1. The staff were unfriendly and unaccommodating. They seemed frustrated by a lack of staff and equipment, and almost every request was met with “no”, whether it was for a simple cocktail, a band-aid, or arriving five minutes early for breakfast.
2. The food was mediocre at best and outrageously expensive. We spent £250 on an average lamb dish and a single scallop.
We were really saddened to have ended our stay with such a poor experience.

The room was stunning and the views even more so. Very comfortable and quiet.
Nothing to add here

The breakfast was excellent. The room was very clean, and mostly comfortable.
Location was too far outside of Portree and difficult to get to.

Comfortable accommodation with so much history in a stunning remote location that makes Skye famous for what it is. Got up and walked at Quiraing at down and made it back for breakfast! Great service made to feel very welcome and at home. Would definitely stay again.
Minor really but the main course at dinner wasn’t to our liking and we love seafood. Paid a similar price for a meal in another lodge on the Isle and it was to a higher standard.

The room was fantastic.
The person checking us in wasn't very friendly or informative. The cost of the room is extremely high. The staff did not seem that happy except for Elizabeth, who served us breakfast on our first morning there.

Really high class place, great rooms and superb location in the middle of nowhere.
We did not want the gastronomic 6 course dinner but they don’t offer an alternative. Other than a mediocre cheese platter with 5 small pieces of not exceptional cheeses, and some old grapes for nothing less than £ 45! It breaks the spell.

History of the house was interesting.
Our room was large and comfortable. Bathroom was new.
Historic period furniture which was very comfortable. Very beautiful and remote location.
We came in at 7:30 pm after a very long travel day. Weather was not good.
A very high wind storm and rain.
We didn’t reserve dinner in advance and asked if we could eat. They said no. We asked for any type of food, they said they couldn’t give us anything for a snack.
So we had a couple of candy bars and some cookies and ate that.
Bring some snacks with you if you don’t make advance dinner reservations. I suggest they should keep some snacks on hand to sell.
After all the room was very expensive at over $600 a night.
We did really like the Scottish bed and breakfast place and glad we stayed.

A very unique place with a high level of service.

Clean well presented, with friendly staff in a unique location.
Although the food was good, it was overpriced, compared with similar accommodation or restaurants

Breakfast was lovely, the hotel is quite isolated and it is a busy single track road, followed by a track to the hotel
Other evening meals apart from the taster menu

Fantastic room and beautiful location.
The last 4-5 km to get there are challenging.
The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming.
However the supporting staff during dinner was not in line with what to expect in such a high level guest-house.

It was probably the best place for that part of Skye as there were very few hotels and guest houses.
The breakfast was limited they could have offered cereals for example and perhaps yoghurt and fresh fruit rather than the heavy cooked choices .we were not sure the expensive tasting menu was actually a tasting menu just limited choice!

Very beautiful view and quiet. The room was very clean and the food was amazing.

This was a lovely place to stay for one night on our road trip around Scotland’s north coast 500 and up to Skye. Our room was spotlessly clean with nice bathroom products and a welcome biscuit. The bed was comfortable and we liked reading the history of the place. The set tasting dinner (which you must book in advance) was exceptional and breakfast was good as well.
The check in was transactional and not particularly welcoming. The room was in the roof with velux windows and whilst advertised as a sea view it really should say sea glimpse ( you can see it when standing up and looking at a slither of the sea). We stayed in better rooms on our trip at a much cheaper price with proper sea views. The dinner was delicious but I wished the server would have explained the dishes when serving them - for this type of tasting menu that’s usually what happens and we were interested in what we were eating. In summary we had a good 24 hours at the Monkstadt and it’s worth a visit but at the prices they charge I expected more.

Lovely decoration in every room. Tasting menu excellent. Good service. Very interesting historical location. Water out of the tap vey pleasant to drink. Well placed for the ferry to Harris.
Sourdough bread in the morning a bit hard.

Incredible location, beautiful room, historic element of the hotel was really engaging. Food was exceptional
Considering it was a tasting menu, and the price point we would expect a little more attention from the staff regarding delivery and details about the food (plates being placed on the table with no description of the dish, made it feel unnecessarily underwhelming) considering how much effort clearly goes into menu it is such a shame to not see it through with the service element BUT was still amazing. In contrast to the very well researched and executed local menu, the drinks/ wine selection were limited.
Not to have ketchup at breakfast was a bit weird..

It was a large spacious room. It had some nice furnishings, albeit eclectic. It had a good TV selection in the living space. It included a sink and good toiletries. It had complimentary slippers.
It had stained or dirty bedsheets. It had an aged duvet which needs replacing. It had an unwelcoming feel. Everything was too much trouble. The breakfast selection was poor and poor quality in some areas. No cereal offered. Self service toast. Mean portions on some breakfast items such as the fruit starter. The sofa was uncomfortable as was most of the seating available and was broken, but fixed during the stay. There was no food options other than booking for the evening taster menu. Requested a cheese board and told the chef was too busy to cut it as during service until 9 PM. Given that it’s a cheeseboard, it seems unhelpful that the two staff stood chatting weren’t able to cut a cheeseboard. No tea towel for sink. Mould around some bathroom parts. See photos. A complaint was made about the unclean bedsheets and a refund was agreed for one night. It gave a terrible welcome to Skye, I honestly can’t believe how unwelcome we felt. For a supposedly 5 star premises, a definite rethink on prices and operation are needed. Having travelled all of the isles for the last 4 weeks, staying in 5 star premises, this was unacceptable. It marred our holiday and we won’t be back. Not the property’s fault, but Skye need to sort the roads, the hotel should mention it is at the end of a pot holes road which is unsuitable for cars with low profile tyres. I do not usually write poor reviews preferring just to move on, but at £450 a night, I think those booking expect better. My thanks to Ela for trying to resolve the issues, but I have to say, it didn’t quite go far enough.

Monkstadt 1745 was superb in all respects. The room was exceptional. The staff was most helpful and friendly. And the location was isolated and beautiful.
The last five miles of the public road was in need of significant repair (potholes).

Had a lovely time although it was a short stay we really loved it!
I liked everything!

The rooms were beautifully decorated with quality furniture and fittings
Our suite, and particularly the bedroom was above the kitchens, so at 6.55am we were woken by the chef arriving to start preparing breakfast and we could hear when other members of staff arrived and started talking to each other. Certainly not what I expect from an establishment with that price point. I would have highlighted this to the manager at breakfast but there was only one young person serving who didn't seem to understand my concerns.

Stunning location on the northern peninsula of the Island of Skye. Close and scenic drive to Kilt Rock/Mealt Falls, Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing. We stayed in the Alexander Suite, which was lovely and had its own wood burning fireplace. 5-course dinner was very good, several other locations within a short drive to eat and recommend making reservations in advance. Definitely would visit and stay at Monkstadt again!
Expensive but worth the stay

This hotel is a must stay in isle of skye. It's history itself makes it worth the stay. This is not it though, it offers amazing food, the rooms are recently renovated and have latest facilities. There was a fireplace in the common room with old days equipments which made it really fun and romantic. The owner of the hotel was very friendly and told us about the history of the hotel and how Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed close to the hotel during the escape. The room was beautiful as well. It was a very lovely romantic stay.
the price is on higher side and the location is remote. We came during the evening when the weather was bad (raining heavily), finding the place and the drive became a bit of a challenge. Else it is perfect!

Location was amazing , our room was comfortable ,quiet and ideal to relax in. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The only minor thing I can think of is we were in room 6 and the living area downstairs could’ve done with the option of brighter lighting.

Nice small property in remote part of sky. Because of its remote location it is a destination to go to just for the hotel
I can see those running it are trying to provide a unique boutique hotel experience and it is an attractive property , however, being small in size and remote we felt that they weren’t particularly warm and welcoming so didn’t enjoy it as much as we had hoped.

What a gorgeous boutique hotel, the architecture, decor, and the grounds are absolutely spectacular. The owner has really put an effort into the interior design, with unique historical touches, little hidden gems, and book that tells you about the history of the place. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking a treasure of an experience. Enjoy the journey to get there, the scenic drive is utterly amazing.

Good breakfast and dinner, wonderful staff and helpful owner, and the room was beautiful
Nothing major to suggest - perhaps the service during breakfast and dinner could be quicker but its a small place and tough to serve many people.

Beautiful, quiet setting and spacious accommodations. Great place to settle in for a bit while exploring Isle of Skye.
Nothing. Prospective guests need to be aware that there are limited services nearby as the place is remote, but that was fine with us. We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere.
