Host & Stay - The Coach House

The property is beautiful. It was very comfortable with enough space for 9 adults. The location was superb with views across the estuary. It is situated in a very quiet and peaceful location which was good for sleeping with windows open in hot weather. The kitchen, living room and dining table worked well for our family.

Other reviews had mentioned some issues with the showers, these hadn’t been quite resolved, however we were able to manage fine and the showers do work.

Amazing location right in the Abbey with nice views of Whitby. Can walk the coastal path by just leaving the house. Abbey brewery is like 2 minutes walk and there is also the lovely youth hostel bar and restaurant next door. Lovely building which retained some of the stonework from the olden days.

Poor communication with hosts. I enquired about a travel cot which was apparently available on demand but was told they could not provide one but I was “welcome to bring my own” which I was like thanks what else am I supposed to do in this situation. On arriving at the property found a travel cot in the closet! I also asked about parking and was told that parking was not guaranteed despite being advertised on the property details. I started to get annoyed with the chat at this point and got a further response detailing that there was in fact parking. I think the problem is I was probably talking to an AI chat bot which had no actual knowledge of the property and was just reflecting non-committal words back at me. The windows are quite small which is a shame because of the view. Also we stayed during the May heatwave and it was very hot in the attic and only one window would open. They could do with providing some fans and fixing that window. I note others complained about this in previous reviews and I suspect this review will also get the same AI response about how they will work to improve this lol. Also lots of texts trying to upsell things like early check ins for £££.

Superb location and large well equipped character property with panoramic views over Whitby.

First thing the morning after we arrived I called Host & Stay (an offshore call centre?) to inform them that one of the bathroom overhead showers wasn't working and the dishwasher was faulty, with the drain function not working. I was promised by Host & Stay that the faults would be fixed and left the key in the keysafe to allow maintenance access whilst we were out. When we returned we found to our dismay that the fauIts had not been fixed. I phoned Host & Stay who said the work had been signed off as completed at their end, and they were surprised to hear there was still a problem. I was asked to wait on the line whilst they looked into it. I hung up after 30 minutes! The advantages of a private host rather than call centre should not be underestimated!

Location Size

There is no option for single beds for children , there were no oven gloves in the kitchen, The wifi is poor and the smart tv doesn't work. The place wasn't very clean , lots of rubbish under the beds and behind the sofas , and no toiletries in the bathroom as shown. For this price for 4 nights i expected a higher standard.
