Charming and location
Banged my head a couple of times
5.0 / 10.0
Excellent location
Refurbishment of cottage was to a good standard
Bedroom and living room furniture comfortable.
Poor provision for people arriving later in the day i.e.:
only one toilet roll, no basic cooking condiments provided e.g. sauce, olive oil, milk, butter etc - which means that people arriving late have to search the village for these supplies when the shops might be closed
No board games provided
Instructions for accessing wi fi were incorrect - had to ring the owner
Given that cottage is probably let predominantly to walkers and people with a dog, there was no focussed provision for this - eg boot scraper outside, hose pipe to wash dog etc
kitchen provision felt a bit dated - e.g. no air fryer, limited cutlery and insufficient plates, bowls, glasses etc
Limited information provided about the village of Castleton -e.g. where the shops are, their opening time, emergency info etc.
Limited bathroom washing facilities - one small bar of soap, no shampoo etc
Even though we were told in advance, I think the lack of logs to light the fire is not very customer focused - in my view, there should at least have been enough logs for one fire session.
The check in time is very late (5 pm)- I asked for an earlier time and it was granted (3 pm). I think that a check in time of 2 pm is not unreasonable.

The location was great .
The facilities were poor. The second bedroom was dangerous. The photos on the website did not really show this and when looking you would never expect a second bedroom like this . The settee was uncomfortable and needs replacing. The kitchen was not fit for purpose . The whole property felt dirty.

The location was great.
The could have been a fab little cottage…and some aspects were pleasant.
As it was Christmas Eve when we arrived…it would have been a nice gesture to leave some fuel and maybe some sort of welcoming ‘Goodwill’ gesture…
I did receive a message about fuel for the log burner …the day before our arrival, which should have been sent earlier, recommending we order a fuel pack. Luckily the local shop was still open and we managed to get a starter pack. For the amount of money paid I would have expected at least one pack to be included. The living room was freezing, and the radiator was stone cold. It was situated behind a massive corner sofa so we couldn’t really see to adjust the valve. We did manage to get it to work but it was intermittent.
Once we did get the fire going, it was a cosy room.
Also, we were disappointed with some aspects of cleanliness, especially as there was a £65 cleaning charge! The bathroom cupboard was grubby, there was a clump of hairs around the bedroom radiator when I bent down to alter the valve. The ‘White’ towels were a pale shade of grey…and smelled fusty. The toilet seat was loose and not fitted properly, which my husband rectified. Also, the kitchen taps were loose…
It was a real shame as this could and should have been such a little gem…it didn’t come up to scratch and was a lot of money for a Christmas disappointment.

Great location and really good bed, fireplace and heating. Bedroom has been updated since the photos with a decent sized shower instead of bath.
A few arrival basics would be good for the price and the lights left on etc so its just a bit more welcoming. Dishwasher not working and seen old reviews saying the same, so naturally nothing was as clean as it could have been as evident the plates etc had just been hand cleaned - in a rush.
Similarly the garden just needed a bit of TLC.

Low ceilings bumped my head a few times - it’s a very old cottage just be aware of it.

The location
No Milk in fridge, most holiday cottages provide a pint on arrival

Outstanding location in the centre of the village square, with access at the back to a breathtaking cavedale.
The main bedroom was very comfortable.
The second bedroom was functional but a niche in the wall, not ideal.
The downstairs is set into the rock of the hillside and has a slight cellar feeling to it, but nicely decorated and furnished.

Position was excellent, right in the heart of Castleton. Cental heating was good, so lovely and warm for an old cottage. King size bed was great.
Unfortunately the dishwasher was not working 😕 no mirror in the bathroom, although to be fair, there is not really space with the shape of the bathroom walls.

The cottage was in an excellent location for walks, pubs, shops and tea rooms. The cottage had a quirky yet homely feel to it. The bed in the main bedroom was so comfortable.

Location was perfect. Went to concert at Devil's Arse cave just minutes away. Easy access to the walks we had planned. The cottage was really quiet at night. Shops, pubs, tea shops nearby. All equipment needed in the kitchen except we couldn't find any saucepan lids!
Would have preferred a free standing bed in the second bedroom but we managed.

good location.
2nd bedroom not suitable for adults. lots of stairs. really felt like being in a cave or on a sailboat.

The main bedroom was fantastic, not made for tall people but you expect that with older cottages.
The second bedroom with the bed in the hole in the wall was stuffy uncomfortable for adults to sleep in. I can imagine children would love it.

Location. Quirky cottage. Host delivered missing 2nd key promptly.
Windows did not open as keys broken and it was really hot. Could not turn off living room radiator. No dishwasher tablets. Garden area could do with attention and was pretty unusable. Felt it was overpriced.

Great location - so many pubs and eateries in 5 mins walk! And great scenery and attractions.

Shame the jets in the bath didn't work!

Beautiful old cottage , location perfect for Castleton walks , shops , pubs . Tastefully decorated with everything you could need and more. Very clean and comfortable , log burner made out snowy stay so cosy. Pictures do not do it justice. main bedroom is lovely , bed is massive and very comfortable. Pizza oven room as we nicknamed it is smaller but bed is comfortable and spacious enough for 2 . We would definitely go back. Do heed to low ceiling warnings but it does add to the charm of this little gem.

Great Location passage to Cave Dale walk on the doorstep as well as Mam Tor, great for exploring what Castleton has to offer. Dinner recommended at The Castle Inn & The Peak Hotel, Look out for live music at the Nags Head & Breakfast at Tilly's Cafe was Brilliant.
The cottage was quiet small however bigger than expected from the pictures, just be prepared for that but we enjoyed it thoroughly. The interesting 2nd bedroom bed is bigger than the picture and opens up, have to be able bodied but part of the adventure and use of space!

Location was lovely
Living room was comfortable
Furnishings and decor in good condition
Good WiFi
Cooking facilities very poor. We were not able to cook anything as aga hobs and oven were not heated.
Bathroom lock was broken
No light switch for bathroom from small bedroom
Small bedroom light switch was outside the bedroom
Could do with steps up to alcove bed as existing box is too high

A fantastic location, away from the main road so really quiet, but close to everything. A comfortable and cosy cottage.
A few spots without enough headroom. I'm only 1.68 metres, but banged my head a few times, once quite badly

Very central yet out of the way (literally at the start of cave dale walk).
Very clean, beautiful old cottage.
Powerful shower.
Good WiFi.
Issue with heating (yes even though summer this is England and it was really cold on our first night!) owner was quick to respond and attempt to sort out.

Lovely comfortable large bedroom and bed and loads of space to store things.
Fantastic garden. So peaceful with beautiful planting. A real bonus.
No hot water until we were able to check with the hosts. As the availability of hot water is dependent on the Aga, could the relevant dial, (which you ask your visitors not to touch ), be checked for working order before their arrival?
Would be good to have more instructions to cook on the Aga to help with timing for meal preparation. This took a very long time to heat up.

Very central and clean
The second bed was quite difficult to get into as in a covered alcove. If you have mobility issues you would not be able to get in. It does not mention this in the information. You have to crawl into the bed. There is a leak in the shower that drips into the kitchen, it looks like they know about it as lots of sealant around the taps in bath.
