I felt cheated by the way this hostel handled my payment. Although the accommodation itself was fine, the payment experience was extremely frustrating and misleading. The hostel charges an additional 15% fee for credit card payments. I was aware of this and had no problem paying it. However, as a foreign tourist, I should have been eligible for Argentina's 21% accommodation VAT refund, provided the property meets the applicable tax requirements. I showed the staff the exact price breakdown displayed on Booking.com and clearly explained that the correct amount should be the accommodation price excluding VAT, plus the 15% card fee. Despite this, the staff insisted that I had to pay the VAT-inclusive price PLUS an additional 15% card fee. Even after I showed them the figures on Booking.com, they refused to acknowledge the discrepancy. To make matters worse, they claimed that I could simply get the VAT refunded at the airport when leaving Argentina. This is clearly INCORECT information. Argentina's accommodation VAT refund system is handled at the time of payment for eligible bookings, not through the airport tax refund procedure. I cannot tell whether the staff deliberately misled me or genuinely did not understand the regulations. Either way, insisting on an unexplained extra charge and giving guests incorrect information about how to recover their money is unacceptable. The hostel itself was not bad, and I have no particular complaints about the accommodation. However, I strongly recommend that anyone booking this property, especially foreign tourists, carefully check the VAT rules, Booking.com price breakdown, and the additional 15% card fee before paying. Do not assume that the amount they demand is correct, or that you can recover the difference at the airport.
