New Oscar

I had a very pleasant and comfortable stay at New Oscar after attending a concert at the Racecourse. I appreciated the proximity to the Racecourse (a less-than-20-minute walk late at night, rather than a 40-ish minute walk to the hotels near to the stations) and had a surprisingly spacious single room (Room 12) for the night. I was concerned by some recent reviews of rooms not being clean but this wasn't my experience, though comments that the property is a bit tired were fair. It was also priced much lower than properties I looked at which were nearer to the train stations and high street, so helped me keep costs down for my short Windsor trip. I spoke to two staff members at front desk - one on arrival and one on checking out - who were pleasant, polite and helpful, with the gentleman on checkout very happy to give me directions and recommendations for where nearby to get some breakfast (bakery within the Co-op, if anyone is interested!).

My room got really hot really quickly, though my stay was in the middle of an unprecedented heat wave. To their credit there was already a fan in the room to help, which I relocated to the bedside table for the best chance at being cool enough to get to sleep. The loo/shower room was very small but I didn't exactly spend ages in there so not an issue, just a little tight and uncomfortable. The main concern was that the window didn't lock and was held shut with a rubber doorstop, though as I was two floors up I didn't feel I was in particular danger. The property is definitely quite tired but as I was not looking to spend a lot of money on my one-night stay, this was an observation rather than an outright negative.

The room was very clean and smelt clean as was the bedding. The room was large and they had left a fan in as it was hot. Flat screen TV was a welcome addition too. The gentleman that checked us out was very friendly. Whilst none was on reception they either appeared very promptly or you could ring a bell. The beds were very comfy after being on your feet all day. Whilst it could do with a revamp it’s more than suitable for a good nights sleep!

On arrival the gentleman checking us in wasn’t overly friendly. Didn’t even check our name against the booking just slid a key over to us. We were asked about parking but managed to secure a spot on the street to avoid the £15 surcharge. The only small downside was throughout the evening there was a lot of voices, walking around and banging from I can only assume other guests or residents that live there. It was very noticeable especially around 1am to 3am.

The place is on the older side. There is no air conditioning but with a fan in the room it was bearable.
