Tamonkan

The location was excellent and very convenient- just a short walk from the bus stop and within easy walking distance of the trail to Mount Haguro. The historic house itself is beautiful and full of character. But the real highlight for us was the food: it was among the best meals we had during our time in Japan. Our host was absolutely lovely and explained each dish to us, which made the meal even more special. She is clearly an incredibly talented cook, and every dish felt thoughtful and carefully prepared. A wonderful place to experience the atmosphere, history, and food of this special area.

The main drawback was the lack of air conditioning. Understandably, this is an old historic house, but even with the fans provided, the room was quite hot and uncomfortable. Another thing worth mentioning is that the room's sliding doors could not be locked, which meant that privacy was somewhat limited.

The building is beautiful, well laid out. Both rooms I have stayed in were comfortable. The food was outstanding. Most important for me was that the little Japanese I speak was completely, and joyously, accepted.

A+ Toki san and his wife deliver an exceptional ryokan experience! Second time I have stayed here. Awesome.
