Deniz Pansiyon

Deniz Pansiyon is a centrally located pensione in old Alsancak of Izmir. Convenient to transit, Izrail, and a short walk to the commuter ships. It does not pretend to be a hotel, because it is not a hotel. And, very inexpensive breakfasts are available within 100 meters of Deniz's entrances. But for a budget-conscious traveler (not looking for "hostel" level experience), you can stay reasonably inexpensively and visit area attractions, both within walking distance and through the numerous transit options, without expensive taxi or limousine services. The staff is congenial, and will assist you with the services that you need (mind you, this was my 5th stay at Deniz or its companion, Ad Otel which is a couple blocks away). Clearly, if you truly treasure a more expensive option, choose one of the big hotel chains. But if you want to support a family-owned business, Deniz Pansiyon is a good choice.

I can't say that I disliked anything when I was there. Certainly, if you expect Omni or Hyatt-type experiences, you'll be disappointed, in the same sense that if you expect a Turkish bath... Nonetheless, you can take the Izrail to the Esbas station and walk a couple blocks to Fez Spa and get your entire body worked over for less than 50 USD....

Breakfast is not provided, but Deniz is located in the midst of a busy shopping district. A couple blocks away, Cypress is one of many upscale areas (which has limited early breakfast fare because Turkish shops open later), but a traditional lentil soup, kumla (tomato cheese chickpea bread sandwich), Turkish coffee or tea is available for less than 4 American dollars. One can stay quite inexpensively at Deniz -- if you look for hotel accommodations it will be triple the cost.

When traveling alone, I don't need my room cleaned very often, so I'm probably unlike other travelers. A twice weekly cleaning would be better than a weekly one, but if you need clean towels or other items, the staff will accommodate you. Spanish is the cleaning staff's second language after Turkish, but since I'm fluent in Spanish, it was easier.
