The Ayrshire and Galloway

The hotel is located in Central Ayr and offers easy access to the shops, restaurants, beach and transport links. It also has its own car park. There was a warm welcome when we arrived at reception and the bar staff were very pleasant.

The rooms are in need of updating and fresh decorating.

The location was very good for me as it is fairly close to the railway station. The Shower/Toilet room was spacious and clean. The room was adequate, slightly dated but okay.

The reception was often closed, although someone would come if you pressed the bell. I rarely saw anybody around and anyone could just walk in and walk up the the stairs. I wasn't keen on the stairs because two of the corners were rounded giving rise to steps that went from wide to narrow, as in a spiral staircase. There was no lift in the hotel and all rooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors. The hotel says that they have free Wi-Fi, by that I assume it's free because you can't connect to it. I asked twice about it and just got the reply that it is a bit temperamental! I never once managed to connect. The windows were old sash windows and the paint was flaking and the gulls made a terrible row all through the night (not the hotel's fault). I wasn't aware before I arrived that the hotel does not serve breakfast. They told me that the Meridian Cafe nextdoor does breakfast but that didn't open until 8.30. I wanted breakfast about 7.30 but I found Cafe 51 about 5 mins walk from the hotel - I can certainly recommend Cafe 51.
