Grand hotel Starý Smokovec

Very nice stay, the breakfast was fabulous, the location great.

The location of the hotel is excellent. Train and funicular stations are just a few minutes walking distance away. The view from our room overlooking the valley was magnificent. Our "deluxe" (category) room was spacious and nicely appointed. The pool/spa area was also very nice with a fine selection of pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room that were very nice as well.

We were very surprised that most all of the rooms have a bathtub (which is very large and comfortable) but lacking proper shower facilities. The handheld shower option behind the partial glass partition is awkward & cumbersome to use. It would be nice if there was a proper shower stall. In the restaurant the staff is very (at times over attentive) clearing away dishes, yet it takes a long time for the waiter to come a take a drink order. One day we waited just under 30 minutes (having already consumed our appetizer, soup and salad, until I went directly to the bar counter to place my drink order. Then every time at the end of the meal, I had to hunt down a staff member to sign our bar tab at the end of the meal. The buffet meals for the inclusive breakfast and dinner were good but not exceptional, as we would have had expected from a 4 star Grand Hotel.

Laura at reception gave us a very nice welcome and booked a taxi for us . Fabulous breakfast with a very helpful team cooking omelettes and clearing tables. Spa and pool were never too busy . Changing rooms very clean. Our room was on the top floor in the corner with great views of the mountains, quiet and spacious.

We had a meal in the lobby which was underwhelming. A cocktail was poor for its price.
