My family and our friends (4 adults and 2 teenagers) had a great two-week stay over March Break at Villa Casa Blanca, which is located in the hills overlooking the ocean between Santa Teresa and Mal País. This was our third trip to Costa Rica, but our first time staying in the Mal País/Santa Teresa area, and we really enjoyed it.The villa is on a steep hill in the middle of the jungle, just over a kilometre from the nearest beach, and feels very private, with no one else in sight. It’s modern, with huge glass windows throughout that make you feel completely immersed in the surroundings. At the villa, you’re surrounded by lots of flora and fauna, with daily sightings of capuchin and howler monkeys exploring the trees around the property, along with macaws and other tropical birds. The 20-metre lap pool and outdoor gym area (including permanent pull-up and dip bars — something every villa should have!) got plenty of use. Other days were spent surfing, running, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring the quieter beaches along the coastline.The owner, Michael, was very responsive, usually replying within minutes on WhatsApp, and the villa staff were always available whenever we needed them for cleaning, maintenance, or the occasional meal on nights when we didn’t feel like heading out. There are also dozens of great restaurants just a short drive away.A great stay all around. We’d be very happy to return to Casa Blanca.

The hosts were very accommodating. The home has spectacular views and is very comfortable with all the amenities. It is a hike to get there, but we made it with no problems. The home is a short drive to dining and groceries, but it also can be a resort in and of itself. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Our stay at Casa Blanca was magical! This property was the centerpiece of an unforgettable trip; a private slice of heaven. The moment you arrive you step into a secret botanical garden in a private rainforest oasis. This property in the hills offers breathtaking 360-degree views of ocean & rainforest. It is peaceful, secluded & only a short minutes' drive from the center of town. You get the best of both worlds: total privacy & easy access to all amenities, restaurants & beaches. Relaxing in the pool we saw geckos, frogs, toucans, howler monkeys & macaws. Watching butterflies dance around the garden while breathing in Jasmine & Ylang-ylang was mesmerizing. Viewing gorgeous sunsets while the jungle came alive around us is an experience I’ll never forget. The home is impeccable & equipped with everything you need. The open floor plan sets the vibe for ultimate relaxation; the perfect balance of luxury & nature. The rooms are spacious & every room offers stunning views. Waking up to that scenery each day is a privilege. Huge thank you to our hosts, Mike & JC, who were wonderful from start to finish. Communication was prompt & they were helpful with suggestions for activities & dining. They truly care about their guests' experience.Thank you to Maria & Eduardo, who keep the property in immaculate condition. They were there if we needed anything, but masterful at being invisible when we didn't. If you’re looking for a private sanctuary, this is the paradise you’ve dreamt of.

Im a city slicker - and I usually like "traditional" luxury trips but wanted something different and this home and location are certainly that! I was worried that Mal Pais was too far from Santa Teresa but one call with Michael, the owner, and I felt good. Michael and his team are real top level VRBO homeowners who care about their guests experience. Awesome communication. Mal Pais is even more raw and relaxed than Santa Teresa. You can get into town easily or relax in the jungle with an amazing pool up at the home. Pictures don't do the home justice, we loved it and all the care that Michael put into the home. We will definitely be back!Couple words of advice: Rent a true 4x4 SUV yes the driveway is steep but after a couple times you will get used to it. Meet Michael and team in town and follow them up to the house first check in to make it easy. Rent ATV's for awesome adventures (Michael can help you) it makes the trip soooo much fun. Work with Michael to get reservations at some restaurants in town he's not only an amazing owner but moonlights as quasi concierge. We loved Koji's, and Katana's for dinner and Rocamar for daytime/sunset food and hangs at the beach
