About this house rental

Palazzo Guicciardi: Living Twelve Centuries of History in the Alps (1548)
"Stepping across the threshold of Palazzo Guicciardi means entering an indissoluble bond with the territory."

Owned and preserved by our family, present in Ponte in Valtellina since 773 AD (when our ancestor Guicciardo settled here after crossing the Alps following Charlemagne), this noble residence is documented in its current form since 1548. Today, the Palazzo opens its doors as an exceptional retreat where modern comfort meets authentic Renaissance art.

The Property: Renaissance Atmosphere & Contemporary Comfort
The estate offers two distinct souls that can be experienced separately or together for larger groups:

The Palazzo (Noble Wing): The heart of the residence, featuring spacious rooms that adapt to the rhythm of the Alpine seasons. On the ground floor, you will find the 1579 Stüa (a traditional room entirely paneled in ancient wood), the Kitchen of the Senator with its monumental stone fireplace, and the Green Parlor overlooking the loggia. It features three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The Fresco Rooms (May – September): A "living museum" on the first floor. To protect the precious 16th-century fresco cycles, these rooms are not artificially heated, offering natural cool and a timeless summer experience (available for groups of more than 4 guests or as a Prestige upgrade).

The Granary (Il Granaio): A character-filled apartment converted from the ancient granary, connected to the main building by a "glorietta" (a small bridge-loggia) spanning the street. This independent unit features a contemporary design, a loggia overlooking the mountains, and air conditioning.

Location: Between Heroic Vineyards and Alpine Trails
Located in the heart of Ponte in Valtellina, a village that has perfectly preserved its medieval and Renaissance footprint, the Palazzo is the ideal starting point to discover a unique territory:

Via dei Terrazzamenti (Terrace Way): A cycling and walking path through the "Heroic Vineyards" (a UNESCO World Heritage site). It is the best way to admire the ancient dry-stone walls and historic churches dotting the Rhaetian slope.

Sentiero Valtellina: Over 100 km of cycling path along the Adda River. A flat and safe itinerary, ideal for families and nature lovers.

The Bernina Red Train (UNESCO): Just a short distance away, embark on one of the world’s most spectacular rail journeys toward the Swiss glaciers and St. Moritz.

Alps & Lakes: Lake Como is reachable in less than an hour, as are the most famous Alpine passes. For sports enthusiasts, the Adda River offers thrilling rafting, while the Alpine streams are ideal for sport fishing.

Ski & Spa: Only 20 minutes from the ski resorts of Aprica and Valmalenco, and close to the millenary thermal baths of Bormio.

Guest Notes
Outdoor Spaces: Private courtyards, the ancient wine-press porch, and a secret garden equipped with a BBQ for total privacy.

Family Friendly: We provide a complimentary crib and high chair for our younger guests in the Palazzo wing.

Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of this 16th-century building, there are stone stairs and passages that may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility.

We had a wonderful stay here, in this incredibly characterful and historic house. To begin with the children found it a little overwhelming, being so old, but it was clean, warm and well equipped, and it was a perfect base for our week long holiday in this hidden away and interesting area. The kitchen was a joy to cook meals and to eat in - it felt like one had stepped into a period drama TV show! The living room was very comfortable, and the bedrooms perfectly fine. We enjoyed using the table tennis table, and the location of the house, so central in very charming Ponte in Valtellina, was great - we had the little grocery shop less than a minute's walk away, the ice cream shop two minute's walk away (although it closed for the end of the season part of the way through our stay - probably a good thing!), and various cafes, restaurants and bars within five minute's walk. The cobbled streets of Ponte are quite lovely, and the views from here absolutely spectacular. The house's location gives many opportunities for exploration - we thankfully had a car for the week - suggested drives: visit the Alpe Gera dam (the drive there is incredible, and the dam is an awesome sight); drive into Switzerland up to St. Moritz, over the Bernino Pass (much cheaper than the Bernino Express, and you can stop when you like - stop at Poschiavo for a coffee and some food, and enjoy the change in architectural style, and other contrasts, but be aware that there's nothing cheap about St. Moritz that we could find!); drive up to the Stelvio Pass, than take the cable car up to the top station (it's truly spectacular, and to watch people skiing was quite a surprise - the whole drive and visit was a highlight); explore some of the hidden valleys not far from Ponte, including the Val Fontana (you won't see many people up here, and once you've parked as far up as you can, keep on walking, as it's very beautiful). We also enjoyed visiting Tirano - the Parravicini was superb, and for great pizza, try Il Braciere. Finally, we can't thank Marco enough (our host), for his very warm greeting, and the fact that he spent nearly an house showing us around and answering all our questions. He also gave us some lovely local food and drink - the salami and honey were amazing! Thank you Marco - we highly recommend that others come and stay at your house in Ponte, especially if they want to get off the beaten track a bit.

We felt very comfortable in the house and everything was as described and expected. Thanks also to Marco for the tips where you can eat and what can look like.
