Valley View Farm Holiday Cottages

Loved the area. Accommodation was clean and comfortable Lovely white bedlinen and plenty of soft towels

It was all good

Converted farm buildings make up the cottages on the farm. Some connecting walls, but didn't hear any neighbour noise. Drey cottage was very comfortable. Large downstairs lounge and dining area with a good kitchen well equipped, including laundry facilities (washer in kitchen, dryer in a utility room). Full size fridge, hob, oven, toaster and kettle, with a cafetiere, pots and pans and plenty of dishes and utensils. Lounge had large sofa and an armchair, sliding door onto private patio with table and chairs. Smart TV with internet apps and freeview channels. Dining area had table and chairs. Upstairs has two bedrooms both with ensuite (one with a shower, one with a bath, both with a toilet and basin) and excellent hot water supply. Beds very comfortable and good quality towels and linens. Parking is near the door, not a dedicated space, but plenty of room for all the cottages to fit a car. Farm is a working farm, so some farm noise at times but quiet at night. Very comfortable stay in beautiful surrounds. Appreciated the walking guides and the binoculars provided. We visited Castle Howard while there, about a 35-40 min drive.

The road to Old Byland village is narrow and has passing spaces, proper country drive. It's beautiful but be ready for country driving. The directions to the farm are accurate, but there are no signs directing the turns or approaches. A more visible sign to indicate the turning and the farmhouse would be helpful. The curtains/blinds in the bedrooms are not blackout and light in the summer starts around 4am so it's an early awakening. Fine for farmers but guests might appreciate a bit more choice about their wake up time. Blackout blinds/curtains would make a difference.

The location was very central to a wide range of historic houses and sites, and nearby Helmsley is a popular North Yorkshire town with lots of restaurants and stores. My wife liked the smell of barns (not an attraction for some).

If you aren't a fan of narrow lane-ways the two miles of road around the farm in either direction will be uncomfortable - although quite pretty going to and from Helmsley).
