About this house rental

This unique 1933 cottage overlooks beautiful Lake Talquin on a 1-acre landscaped lot with mature trees. Original heart pine floors (newly refinished), 10-foot ceilings, screen doors, and outdoor spaces feel just like your grandparents' home. The house is fully renovated with historic character intact. Perfect for weekend and longer getaways. Enjoy fishing, canoeing, and nature.

This house has been in our family since it was built in Quincy and relocated to the lake in the 1960s. French doors separate the living and dining rooms. The dining area seats 6 and the kitchen pub table seats 2. There are 2 bedrooms -- one queen bed and a double. A queen pull-out couch is available in the living room, and a couch unfolds to a single bed for a child. Maximum persons are 4 adults and 2 children. Pets not allowed. Maximum stay 30 days. The property is non-smoking.

This house uses the original skeleton key in one of the exterior doors. It is recommended to place the key in the inside doorlock at night for easy exit. The house is on a high hill and the walk from the lake has an incline. The inside fireplace is not functional for use.

The outdoor areas include 2 porches and a carport converted to an outdoor room, providing plenty of choices for outdoor relaxation. There is a hammock and wrought iron chairs that offer plenty of outdoor seating. Fish from the dock. There is not a launch area on the property -- launch your boat from nearby Ingram's Marina. There is room to park your trailer and vehicle.

View ospreys, eagles, herons, woodpeckers without leaving the porch. If you are lucky you could see the rare "white squirrel" common in this area.

The neighborhood is quiet and relaxing on a dead-end road bordered by the lake and a wildlife management area. A small grocery and Ingram's Marina are a short drive away. There are miles of nearby hiking, horseback, and biking trails.

Safety: Swimmers beware! The lake is a wildlife habitat and swimming is not recommended. However, it is perfect for boating, canoeing, kayaking and other activities. Use safety precautions when using the firepit. Use the dock at your own risk.

The house is 29 miles (32 minutes) from Doak Campbell Stadium in downtown Tallahassee and is perfect for football games and graduations.

Fishing -- Lake Talquin is nationally known for its high quality bass, bluegill, black crappie, and speckled perch fishing. The best crappie fishing times occur in winter months January through April. The Florida state record for black crappie (3.81 pounds) was caught in Lake Talquin.

This is a good central location for day trips:
Tallahassee -- government, colleges, and FSU and FAMU sporting events.
Havana -- antiques
Apalachicola -- charming seaside town famous for its oysters
Toreya State Park
Wakulla Springs
Thomasville, GA
St. George Island

We love staying off the grid when we come down for a weekend. This home offers just that..time to relax and shut out the outside distractions.

Prior to my arrival I received very detailed instructions about the home and surrounding area and what to be mindful of from the Host. Cell service was very spotty leading up to the house which of course was annoying considering I was using my GPS. Be mindful of that. Once I arrived I absolutely loved the lake and view. I accessed the home with ease. Once I walked in though I was hit by a very potent odor. As if the house hadn't been aired out in quite sometime. At first glance everything was cute and presented lovely. But as I continued to walk through the house, I realized it was quite dirty. Anything that was fabric was visibly dirty or stained. They did provide plenty of sheets, blankets and pillows. It was great that we were able to wash and dry our sheets. My group made sure we brought our preferred detergent. Over the course of 4 days, we discovered a lot of creepy crawlers. A lot of stuff was just dirty. The coffee machine was gross along with the fridge and toaster. They had probably not been cleaned in a long time if ever. They provided plenty of cookware along with seasonings. They had not even swept the floor. When I did, I cleaned up a lot of hair from some kind of animal either cat or dog. It was all over. The house has a lot of potential. My biggest issues were the roaches and the uncleanliness. Overall Happy with the location and home, but those two things should be addressed.
