Ryokan Matsukaze

Everything was wonderful. Hosts, food, location, room, bath, town. All of it!

Nope. It was all excellent.

The staff were extremely friendly. The shower area was very nice. They had free tea and coffee in the lounge and in our room. Our room was super nice, lots of space for the two of us. Everything was quite clean.

Not much, we really enjoyed staying at this Ryokan. They are a good budget pick!

Lovely authentic feeling ryokan without the fancy modern touches of some more expensive / touristy ones. Onsen was great. Very affordable compared to other local property.

Location was a bit out of the main bits of Matsumoto but very walkable. Staff don’t speak very good English but were very kind and welcoming. We didn’t need them to speak English really! Definitely not luxury and a bit more rough and ready but we kind of loved that. Smoking room smell did linger in the corridor sometimes and our room was near so we noticed it outside, but never in our room.

It's cheap and clean. Both the rooms and the showers were very clean and that was nice.

The communication with the owners in English is virtually impossible. Both via booking (no reactions after repeated tries to secure a normal parking space) as face to face. Also no attempts to simply use Google Translate or similar to facilitate communication. They seem pretty ok people smiling and all but there was zero effort to communicate. We came in, got the key and that's it. No explanation about where the showers are, where to park the car, how to check out, how to get the bikes etc etc etc
