Nice couple's stay for hen/stag celebration on the town

The location was great if you are spending time inside the city. Close to lots of cafés, bars and other amenities around the area; right next to Rothe House and the Smithwick's Brewery. The room was comfortable and clean, and the building felt safe and easy to access. The free WiFi was a nice addition.

As it is unmanned, there are no breakfast options for the morning after your stay (which we were aware of before booking). I imagine it wouldn't be easy to contact someone managing the property if help was needed for any reason because of it. We understand that a Saturday night is busy, and we didn't book with much time in advance as we had little notice to book from our side, but just shy of €200 for a night here seemed a bit steep to us. Despite this, we would be happy to stay at Gate Lodge again (with more notice from our side!) if we need a place to stay in Kilkenny City.

Fine and in a good location but I would stay elsewhere

ideally located and clean.

When I arrived the lock box for the key just opened, it’s broken so can opened by anyone. It is ideally located but for the price I paid was a little disappointing. No remote for tv, which is a small thing but should be standard, no milk pods for making tea. When I arrived back on the Saturday night the access card didn’t work and I had to ring a guy who was very nice to let me in. The shower was a little temperamental to use, with the shower tray initially overflowing and trying to get the hot water working. These are all small things which could be easily remedied as I say though it is ideally located.

Found it disturbing

No breakfast provided

No one around and a phone no, which would not work. We eventually extracted our 'key' only to find it did not work for our second night. We managed to rob a 'key' from another 'box' eventually so got to our bedroom. Common parts slightly grubby and bedroom up a flight of 41 stairs - no mention of this when we booked. We are over 80 years and my wife is not robust. You MUST indicate this hazard to your 'guests'.

The carpet could've been cleaner. There were black damp spots on the ceiling in the bathroom, and there was no hot water in the bathroom-sink tap either.

Central and convenient location, but not the best deal. Expensive given the mediocre standard.

The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The Lodge is centrally located in Kilkenny within easy walking distance of most things. Check in procedure was simple and effective.

As the facility is unstaffed there is no one to consult about problems. In the room only one bedside light was working. The bathroom was shabby and in need of upgrading. There was no hanging space for clothes in the room. This place is radically overpriced given the below average standard it offers.

Little gem in the heart of Kilkenny!

Excellent location, walking distance to tourist spots. Fantastic pubs and restaurants just across the road to grab breakfast or enjoy a night out. Staff were very helpful and hospitable. Rooms are comfortable, clean and beautifully designed. If we venture to Kilkenny again we will happily stay at the Gate Lodge!

No on-site parking available, parking available next door in the shopping center which is convenient but pricy. No iron in room but staff dropped one down upon request.

Great and would definitely stay again!

The location to the centre was great, and the staff went above and beyond to accomodate us. Was a great stay overall, especially for the price. Would definitely stay again!

The only downside was the small gap beneath the door, which meant there was a small amount of noise when people were walking past, but nothing super disturbing.

Nice property, but spoilt by lack of finishing touches.

The property presented really well and the owners have obviously spent some money on things like nice carpets, but other things really let the property down.

Our Key Cards did not work and it took the owners over 2 hours to fix this, which was annoying to say the least. The gentleman who was give the task of fixing the problem, was lovely, but clearly not supported by the owners. It was his first day on the job and all the locks had problems - he ended us giving us the master key for the building, which was sweet of him, but I would not have been happy if I was a guest the building knowing a stranger had full access to my room. Poorly handed and it spoilt the experience - plus the owners or Booking have not been in contact to apologise or offer compensation.

Wow. Not what we expected. More issues that it was worth. Stay in a better hotel for the extra 120 euros!

Location seemed good, but parking was horrible and the entrance is not well marked. Also the check in process was not straightforward, as they did not provide the room number and PIN code at 3pm as they had instructed. It was close to 3:15 and we had to message them after two failed calls. Only then did we receive our pin and room number.

Location was noisy, room was hot and no A/C. Had to leave windows open and street noise was bad and got worse from 2-4 am. Also, parking was an absolute disaster. The Market parking lot they suggest is not a good idea. It closes after normal business hours and you CANNOT access your car. All gates lock you out. We had luggage still in the car we needed, with no way to get it. Phone support from the hotel was not at all helpful. Also, the parking lot doesn’t open until local business hours, so we had to wait to access our car/luggage and to exit. Yikes.

Disappointed , expected moor for the cost

Rooms were not available. Had not been cleaned. Manager complained about not having the staff!!. They gave us rooms in an affiliated guest house 10 minutes away which was disappointing. Very bear bones place, no window cover in the bathroom above the toilet!loud drunk guests during the night . Breakfast was good though…

Fabulous location but not what I was expecting as a mature age traveller.

Its location. The room was very comfortable.

The TV didn’t work but there is no one around to ask about it. Although the booking information states you are either in the first or second floor for us on the second floor that meant 5 flights of stairs. Not recommended if mobility or illness is an issue. No on site car parking but a local shopping centre car park is right behind and you can leave your car there overnight for a cost of course. The car park also has washing machines and dryers for public use.

Do not stay here!

There was nothing positive about this place, other than the location in relation to the town.

Unable to gain access to the room and no staff in reception. In fact no reception at all. No parking, parking around the corner and very pricey No lifts had to carry your bags to top floor No Internet and therefore tv did not work No fan No answer to the phone when attempting to contact the agent No bin in the room Coffee machine did not work Light kept going off in the bathroom The photo on original booking page was not the venue. An absolute disgrace

Booked this hotel last min at a discount rate. Would stay again at this rate but not at full price.

Check in and check out was very easy, room was spacious, clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. Location was excellent.

Common areas had an unpleasant smell, more than what you would expect from an old building. There was an air-freshener plug-in in our room which was incredibly strong, even after we unplugged it and opened the window. Anyone with scent sensitivities may want to take this into account. Also, both lightbulbs were missing from our bedside lamps, and this could not be addressed while we were there, as there are no staff on site. I did message the hotel and it was acknowledged promptly that they would be replaced when our room was turned over. Overnight parking in the car park next door cost us 20 Euro.

Great location, nice room with really comfy bed. Coffee maker, fruit basket and bottled water were a really nice perk!

Room was a bit stuffy but openable windows solved that and I couldn't find a rubbish bin so used a plastic bag I had along.

Sort of creepy, not easy to check in, but a convenient location with a decent bed.

We appreciated the bed and the location. It was right downtown and close to good restaurants and pubs.

We didn’t realize that the hotel was not going to have a person checking us in before booking. We would have chosen a different place to stay had we known; this is because we prefer having a check-in/hotel experience where there is actual staff. Since we didn’t have staff, it was a little nerve-wracking. They claimed they would send a message at 15:00 with the code to get into the building; they did not. I had to call about an hour later to ask for help getting into the building. As an international traveler, that was a little scary given that my phone doesn’t always work when traveling abroad. It was also a very expensive hotel. Given the price, many things were worse than expected. For example, the WiFi was quite bad, the environment was honestly really creepy (there was a mysterious door with birds squeaking and hooting behind it??) and the bathroom lights wouldn’t stay on. Honestly might recommend an exorcist of some sort, as the whole place felt “haunted.”

Location was great. Bed and pillows were comfy

No mirror in the bathroom. Light in the bathroom wouldn’t stay on for more than 10 seconds. Shower drain was plugged such that it drained very slowly. WiFi was unusable - very slow if it worked at all. TV didn’t work (likely battery in remote was dead - but don’t know). There is no staff at the hotel to talk to. We didn’t get a text message with the room number and lockbox code to get in to the building. Phoned staff and they gave us the information and said that a text had been sent. We never received it - although we did receive an email sent a day late with the information - but obviously too late. Mgmt will likely respond saying they are (maybe) sorry and everything will be fixed for the next guest - but buyer beware.

Handy location

The hotel was extremely loud. Without it being ran by staff there was no one to control how loud and disruptive guests were. We barely got any sleep from the disruption from other guests. The room was also very warm and no kettle facilities.

Great last minute stay for family, clean rooms and easy central location!

Location is superb, accommodations easy to get to!

There was no mention of the parking closing at certain times directly behind the accommodations to alert us so we ended up getting our luggage locked up overnight which meant a very uncomfortable stay, which isn’t necessarily the facilities fault but a mention would be nice!
