阿寺温泉 フォレスパ木曽あてら荘

Absolutely loved this place. Even though the location isn't very convenient if you're traveling on foot or hiking, it's 100% worth the trip. The staff speak only Japanese, but their hospitality and warmth come through without needing many words. They made me feel genuinely welcome throughout my stay. The meals were exceptional, beautifully prepared, and delicious. The onsen was simply fantastic as well. This is exactly what I was hoping for. Easily a 10/10 experience.

I stayed here while walking the Nakasendo trail. The staff were very helpful and attentive. I was nervous traveling by myself, especially without speaking Japanese, but they went out of their way to help me. They let me use the onsen when I arrived a bit early for check-in, and even gave me a ride to the train station in the morning when I mentioned I had a long day of hiking ahead of me. The room was lovely for the price. It was in the traditional style with tatami mats and a futon, and had a little balcony. The onsen was small but very relaxing and the breakfast was very good, several types of vegetables and proteins (though it is a set plate, not a serve yourself situation). Overall it was a nice way to spend a night on the Nakasendo for relatively cheap.

The building itself and in particular the lobby is a bit on the older side. And just a heads up that from the website it seems like it's right on the river but it's a bit of a walk.
