Disappointing Stay – Not as Advertised
We recently completed an 8-night stay at this cottage, and unfortunately, it did not live up to the high price point or the marketing photos.
The cottage layout is misleading. While the front entrance is at ground level, the main living area at the back is effectively at basement level, making it dark and dreary. The interior is in poor condition; the walls are heavily marked and dirty, and the cream-coloured sofa was so filthy that we refused to sit on it for the duration of our stay. Furthermore, both showers are incredibly small and the doors do not stay shut, which meant the bathroom floors were constantly flooded.
There are also security concerns, as the front door does not close properly and one of the locks is completely non-functional.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is not the place. It is situated directly across from a busy school, resulting in significant noise from children and heavy traffic. It is also sandwiched between a busy road and a public walkway. To top it off, the nearby church bells toll every hour; on Wednesday, they rang continuously for 50 minutes.
We experienced a boiler breakdown leaving us without heating or hot water, though this was fixed the same day. The booking process was also a headache; I received over 18 confusing and contradictory emails from Booking.com and Sykes Cottages regarding payments.
Overall, the property needs a serious refresh and better transparency. We would not stay here again.

The location is very good very near the high street.
The bed was really comfortable.
The church bells ring every 15 minutes even through the night.
The key box is in a strange spot and a little difficult to find especially when the parking warden pounced as we pulled up.
One of the toilets still did not flush even though reported previously in other reviews.
The owners phone is unavailable if you try to call them.
The owners do not respond to messages sent via booking.com which is a first for us .
The windows are filthy, the garden needs a good tidy up and the whole place needs a good deep clean. This would transform the place

Location is great
Many dishes were not clean, the stairs could have done with a better vacuuming.

Good size apartment in a good location
NO WIFI - The wifi "supplied" is via a small mobile data dongle. However, the apartment is in a mobile/4G blackhole, so it does not work. Not even a little. A technician was sent out twice, who just restarted and repositioned the dongle (which we had already done), but it had zero effect. We were left cut-off from communicating with loved ones over Christmas, and couldn't even use any streaming services on the TV. Most stressful was having to go into town to do an internet search of the closest A&E hospital address, when our toddler had a medical emergency.

It was comfortable and well located
Expected more basics- shampoo, conditioner, body wash, coffee ( have spent the last 3 wks travelling in Europe and these are considered basics). The windows and back yard were dirty . It was awkward to change the booking - very easy on booking.com but not so easy through Sykes cottage. The bells at the church - even knowing about them- if the windows are open ( which they were as it was warm) you can hear them every 15mins 24hrs per day. Broken light bulb, broken washing stand.

Location was excellent. Just a few minutes walk to the village. The house was very modern & well equipped overall. Very clean.
Just a couple of small things that could have been better, the dining room chairs were quite uncomfortable, there wasn't a toaster although there was a grill, no full length mirror in any room.

Beautiful well kept property in a perfect location to explore the Cotswolds
Whilst I agree the property should be left in the condition you find it (tidied / dishes washed etc) I found the instructions to strip beds a little much. Also the instructions to empty dishwasher a little impractical as check out being 10am it’s a bit tight if you want to have breakfast before leaving.

Great location, very comfortable & stylish property. Pleased we were able to access the property before 6 pm on a Sunday when nothing was open in Bourton on the water. Milk in the fridge and a packet of biscuits were nice surprises.
The beds had no mattress or pillow protectors - not very hygenic ! We would have at least taken our own pillows had we known. Took some time and a kind neighbour to understand how to open the electric gate.

The location was perfect in terms of being walking distance from the town centre and the fabulous local co-op (better than any co-op we've experienced previously)! We were also well positioned to visit other local towns which was a real bonus.
The lounge was quite cold during the evenings despite the thermostat saying 22 degrees. I'm not sure the heating was actually working. Two of the toilets appear to have problems with continuous water flowing until we fiddled with the flush. We didn't have any dishwasher tablets on arrival which is quite unusual for most of the holiday cottages we've stayed in. It meant we had to venture out that same evening. And finally.... the bells! We knew about them having read about them in other reviews but they really are quite intrusive and I can't understand why anyone would want to hear church bells quite so late and so early.
