Hotel Green Plaza Hakone

To be very clear: what makes this hotel exceptional is the view of Mt. Fuji! We were lucky enough to have Fuji-san come out on 1 of our 3 day stay—and it did not disappoint. Our room had a direct view of the mountain. The gardens had one. The women’s bath at sunset was a glorious Mt. Fuji scenery that was worth every penny. That being said, the buffet had many western/japanese options and kind staff, but overall a tad bland for my taste. But the sushi bar and fresh tempura were a plus! The rooms were clean, if not a little dated, which is normal for Japan. Futon bedding was self-service, but I didn’t mind. The Onsen was lovely! Two baths—one outside and one in on the women’s side—with many products and helpful amenities. The location: is gorgeous. On top of a hill and secluded. We drove to other tourist locations, so for us, it wasn’t a problem. But it could make exploring Hakone for others a bit difficult. The ropeway station is a 3min walk from the hotel (if you had an unlimited pass), but it is a steep forest path—and would not recommend for luggage or strollers. Bus stops are around, we did not use it though. English staff was every where. They immediately asked when checking in if I knew Onsen etiquette—and were willing to explain if you did not. Which is lovely for new travelers, and very clearly explained the Dos and Do Nots of bathhouses felt reassuring. I would come back! :) we had a lovely time, and I’d love to see Fuji-san in the wintertime.

The location is not ideal as it takes 1 hr bus ride from Odawara station. However, once you reach the hotel, location then is perfect. The hotel is very old with rooms are showing it's age. However, the onsen makes up for the short coming of the building.
