Welbedacht Game & Nature Reserve

The eagle cottage is the furthest up the path and we did not see any other people for the whole stay. Ostriches and zebra casually walked by on the main path. The quietness and immersion in nature was amazing. The views were stunning and the venue as a whole was beautifully kept. When we did need assistance, the staff were able to assist promptly.

Due to the honor system and previous guests clearly not reading the instructions, the cutting board in the kitchen was not clean and we had to ask for a broom as the one that was meant to be there had gone missing. This is no fault of the venue, but rather that of previous guests.

Welbedacht is a hidden gem. Just far enough out of town to feel like countryside, but not too far. You stay in a Nature reserve and are surrounded by Springboks, Quagga, Ostrich and various bird species. For the hikers there are a few beautiful routes that you must explore. The showers in our Hadeda cottage were fantastic and very hot. And the complimentary soap, shampoo and conditioner in the shower was a nice bonus. The electric blankets on the beds also made a big positive difference to our overall experience. The fireplace inside works very well and made the interior nice and cosy. The wood that was delivered was nice and dry.

Our unit, Hadeda Cottage, was very well situated, but the noise from the farm workers houses just behind it was disturbing on Saturday evening. And the kitchen area wasn't as equipped as it should be, but when I asked for a whisk, it was quickly delivered. No container for braaivleis, or big salads. Or any ramekins or small holders for sauces etc. We also tried to heat up the very big hot tub, but in this cold weather it was to no avail. Maybe because it was too big, and did not have a cover. In Summer it will be perfect.

The cabin was really well-equipped and was exceptionally neat. It was also very private and the trails were accessible. The proprietors were good at answering questions. A lovely stay.

The beds were uncomfortable in the sense that there were too many blankets and ventilation was not very good. We were unsure whether we could leave the windows open. That being said, had it been a cold, winter's weekend, it would have been fabulous.

While the cottage is pleasant, very quaint and full of character, the space is limited all-round and the furnishing too rustic/dated for my taste. Hey, but it really suits the game reserve and environment. I'm perhaps too used to a bit of luxury, esp. ito space, furnishes and finishings. The cottage however boasts one of the best splash/spa pools I had seen and is just outside the cottage with spectacular views. The place was a good/lovely experience nonetheless.
