Hotel Coconut Bay

Reasonably spacious room with a generous balcony. Proximity to beach. Very friendly staff. There was a cock up with our booking (not our fault). The host sorted this out by putting us up in another hotel for one night and fed us for free that first day - good resolution.

This would have been a 10 if not for the pushy owner. The location was amazing, on the beach, and the small(ish) pool was lovely too. Shower was cold for two days however and pillows were pointless as so small. Lunch was great, we ate lunch twice. Breakfast was tasty but 2500 LKR was very expensive for what you got compared to other places in Sri Lanka. Didn’t eat dinner (see below)

I’ll start with the cold shower and the minimal pillows, both not what you want from a place worth $50 a night. And then I can say the main thing. The owner was one of the most pushy and in the end rudest people I’ve ever come across. Initially he was lovely and friendly but despite us having lots of beers and wine during the day and lunch, when we stated we were meeting friends at Red Lobster down the road (10/10 food) he got very rude and did not talk to us. The second night he was basically forcing a fish platter on us and he was saying live music tonight. We again felt so pressured to eat and when he said the price of food it was twice the price of their lunch menu. When we got back their live music night was outrageous and so loud. It was just the owner and the DJ there smoking and drinking and no care for the rest of the property. Of all guests staying I felt we would have been most up for a night of music so I can only imagine how the other 8 rooms felt when the music was still pumping at 2am with only the boss himself there. We checked out at 8am and the boss just walked past us multiple times without saying thank you for staying or goodbye and was talking to others. This was because we didn’t spend so much money on his fish platters. Just brought our whole feel of the place down.

Great view, a lot of tranquillity. The host really cares and works hard to make you happy. We liked a lot seafood that he bought and cooked for us himself. The room is clean and comfortable, the A/C works well, the sea and pool are just several meters from the hotel door. All the staff are very friendly

If you’re sensitive about salt, maybe you should consider asking to bring salt separately, as most of the dishes made by staff was too much salty as per our taste. The dishes from the owner were just great as it is. I’d also suggest the host to provide free water or at least daily refill.

Cleanliness is very important and beach is dirty with lots of MT bottles and plastics. Owner has dog living in hotel which is poo in font of our room. Lots locals drinking alcohol during the afternoon till late which make us uncomfortable and unsafe. I assume this hotel is designed to locals because unfriendly neibourhood.
