Not likely to go again!
It is a charming old house, great location
I’m sorry to say that we were disappointed with the state and cleanliness of the apartment, we both agreed that it is not up to a standard for renting yet, an upgrade is needed without taking away the lovely charm of the place, going into the issues would take too long, other reviews have pointed them out better.

Cosy authentic Hay On Wye retreat.
I loved my stay at Half Moon House. It has such a lovely energy and vibes. It’s quirky, cosy and it has so much charm and character.
It’s one big room with curtains to divide spaces at night. There is a wood-burning stove that made evenings feel wonderfully snug, and having a kitchen gave me the option to cook. The bed was also super comfy. The bathroom is just across a corridor and has a large shower and lots of hot water. This is an older property like most buildings in Hay and has a fascinating history.
Tam, the host is lovely and gives great recommendations for town. There’s a radio and lots of books to read while you’re there.
The location is brilliant, right in the middle of Hay-on-Wye, so I could wander out to the bookshops and cafés and be back in minutes.
There was nothing I disliked about my stay. I was able to fully relax, I just wished I’d stayed longer.

Lovely weekend get away, so much to see and do in town, especially if you're a book lover!
Perfect location in town centre. Warm, had everything we needed. lovely clean bathroom and shower, quaint old cottage, picturesque. Easy to walk anywhere in town, had our old collie dog with us.
Key was a little stiff in the door, and we were a bit nervous not to break the lovely brass knob

Abysmal - wouldn’t recommend
The location was convenient with site parking
We arrived at the property for 2.30pm and went immediately in to Hay for lunch after a long drive, returning back at approx 5pm in order to settle in and change for our evening meal. This is when the inadequacies of the place were noted
Issues ( evidence with photos)
1. Dirty and stained toilet
2. Cobwebs in many areas.
3. Thick layers of dust particularly in back bedroom
4. Stained sanitary wear in bathroom and kitchen
5. Plants growing through window in lounge area
6. Overall damp and musty which has pervaded into soft furnishings - humidifier for evidence in dining area.
7. The bare concrete floor in bathroom is porous which prevents adequate cleaning therefore unsanitary
8. Lack of light bulbs in bathroom is a trip hazard
9. Bathroom sink not adequately fastened to wall this is a safety hazard
10. No light bulb in spare bedroom
11. Uncovered internal gas meter is highly questionable
12. Walls in living room stained
13. Mats over the floor equally prevent adequate cleaning and present a significant trip hazard.
14. Furniture surfaces generally dusty and unkempt.
15. Kitchen area - drainer on top of fridge( safety issue) wooden countertop, water left in kettle, cupboard, china left on open shelving ( unsanitary )
16. Fridge had leaked all over the carpet, this was notified to yourself immediately on arrival. ( unsanitary)
17. The bed in lounge was just a thin mattress placed over wooden boards
Overall the place is shabby and scruffy, a property of age and character can be presented sympathetically to promote its quirks but Half Moon Cottage in its current state needs complete renovation to make it habitable. The statement that “ your books are sentimental to you” should apply to the property as well.
We therefore reached the decision to look for alternative accommodation at extra cost at 6.30, having only spent 1.5 hours in place at maximum.
The owner rude and demonstrated no customer service whatsoever.

Fantastic long weekend in a place well worth visiting.
Location was brilliant and Breakfast at the Granary was excellent. 5 mins to the river and then a lovely walk to the warren.

Terrible worse place I have ever stayed
Location
The property was musty and smelt of mould. Other people had access through the apartment at any time to get to there apartments, this was not a private apartment as advertised, it was neither a healthy or safe for residence. Definitely not safe for anyone with allergies or children as the separate bedroom was across the corridor from the main room and right next door to the entrance strangers had keys to . None of the internal doors had locks that worked. We had quite a fright when the upstairs tenant worked through the property. We ended up only staying 1 night as i was starting to be unable to breathe due to the condition of the property. And how unsafe we felt. The outside space looked like it hadn’t been touched in months and the benches looked and felt like they could collapse. Nothing quaint about this property!

Great location and a very cozy cottage. Enjoyed our stay there.
The location was absolutely amazing. Walking distance to everything. The house was cozy.
The stove, but thats purely cause I didn't use one like that before.

Overall very good, what was needed, to get away from it all
The location, the history, peaceful and quiet, lots and of space. A place I could live in, if you decide to rent the place on a more permanent basis, let me know :-)
All good

Great Location, but boiler issues and no emergency contact spoilt the whole experience.
Quirky cottage in the heart of Hay-on-Wye, great location.
Arrived Friday 27th Dec evening for a long weekend. The boiler wasn't working (no hot water or heating) and is not located in the apartment, so was unable to investigate why. Tried to contact the emergency number left at the apartment but did not have a response until late Saturday evening, by which time we had already arranged alternative accommodation at The Swan hotel.
Subsequently had correspondence with the owner who apologised and offered a refund which as of 13th Jan has not arrived.
NO TV at the property, which may suit some people but we would have made alternative arrangements if we were made aware of this before we arrived.

Perfect for book lovers!
A lovely, cosy, compact little flat with a rustic style and distinct character. It was really very quiet and peaceful, with no TV, which suited us fine - there were lots of books to browse. Parking right outside the property, and everything we needed for a lovely stay inside. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow and the owner was in contact to check we were settling in. It was very convenient for Hay town centre , bookshops and cafes less than 5 minutes from the house - it was exactly what we had been looking for.
There wasn’t really anything we didn’t like !

A very comfortable, bohemian retreat, home from home.
Half moon house felt like home from the moment I arrived. A beautiful mix of ancient and bohemian. The place feels loved. The sort of place I can imagine a masterpiece being written.

Superb
Marvellous location and great that it has a parking space. It is a really lovely property, that has a great aesthetic.
The kitchen might need to be kitted out a bit better. There was no spatula and the pans were a bit knackered.

Exceptional
I booked this for my parents for their anniversary. It was a gorgeous place in an amazing location right in the centre of Haye. The bookshops were on the doorstep and it was close to a lovely pub. The Half Moon house was lovely. The owner provided loads of advice and information beforehand and couldn't have been more helpful and considerate. My parents had a brilliant trip and are already hoping to return.

A quirky, cosy weekend in a gorgeous location.
Quirky, cosy, great location, historic. Bathroom was lovely and warm, shower good, bed in lounge very comfy. Great if you can get log burner working when cold!
Cobwebs, musty and cold on arrival, old food rubbish still in food rubbish bin. Could do with second comfy sofa so one each to chill out on!

Good
Extremely central in the town, with parking right outside.have to bear in mind very old house, loads of beams etc. kitchen basic but ample, the bed is in the living room, but it’s fine. Has central heating and a log fire, also adequate shower room. No tv but only there for a few days so not a problem. Small seating area to sit outside.
Nothing, as long as you know it’s a very old house, and not 4 star hotel

Not suitable for stays of more than a couple of nights.
Location to town.
The property is old but it was also quite dirty and needed quite a lot of general maintenance and TLC.

Poor
The host is very pleasant and genuinely wants guests to have a pleasant experience. The shower is hot and the parking and location are great. However I think a lack of expertise in what standard is expected from a holiday rental is showing through here.
The property is very basic. The outside space in front of the house is unkempt and the clean was not up to standard although I understand there were extenuating circumstances. There is a strong and pervasive musty smell as soon as you open the door. Wood is not provided for the fire nor are there basics provided such as tea towels or kitchen paper. The bed is simply a mattress on a raised wooden platform - no proper bed base and is very low to the ground. Avoid if you have any back issues. The assortment of floor carpets in the main room are stained. The bathroom`s floor is exposed concrete and the back hall is very roughly finished. I am sorry to leave such a negative review but I was very disappointed overall.

2 nights in Hay on Wye
Very quaint, original and unique, excellent location. It would be very cosy and lovely in winter with the log burner and great original features.
It was older than I thought and there was no separate bedroom apart from the spare single room but we didn't want to go in there as it was quite separate dark and cold. Everything is in one room which is fine, I just didn't expect it!

Passable
The property was in a great location and had all the basics we needed. The little hamper of food and drink there for us was a really lovely touch.
It wasn’t very clean. There were things stated on the listing such as a tv and iron, that weren’t actually there

Great quirky stay right in Hay centre with a wonderful helpful host
The property lived up to our expectations as a quirky, individual place to stay right in the heart of Hay. It was cozy and homely and we immediately felt at home. It was spotlessly clean and very well equipped for a self catered stay.
The bed was huge and very comfortable and all the books in the property made for good browsing rather than a telly. Very appropriate for Hay. Tam who lives upstairs is a marvellous host and really helped to make our stay memorable. She'd prepared some welcome essentials for us which was a lovely surprise and was always on hand to ensure we were enjoying our stay without being intrusive. She made our puppy George, very welcome too and he loved her. We would definitely recommend Half Moon house to those of you who are looking for somewhere to stay with real character not a run of the mill bog standard stay. Free parking in Hay is also a big plus!
Thanks Tam... Hope to visit again!
We loved our stay at Half Moon house and couldn't fault anything

Great location. Beautiful town
Location was amazing with parking right outside. It was really hot at the time so this was a haven of coolness! It's quite a quirky place to stay but well equipped and comfortable. Also, no TV which I thought was great!
Nothing of any note.

Please do not book, waste of money and host is no help!
Leaving was the best part, there is nothing to like about this property.
PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BOOK THIS PROPERTY!
I booked this as a birthday present for my mum and all I can say is what a disappointing and appalling property and host.
1. Don't get taken in by the nicely lit images on the website, as the apartment environment is depressing, dirty in part and dingy
2.The reality is that the bed is nothing like the website image, is quite hard and the bed covers are grey and rough and nothing like the soft, satin-like cover on the website.
3. The old furniture could be characterful but I only ventured into a grubby wardrobe and a chest of drawers which had a jumble of 'things' stuffed into them (it felt like a memorial to someone else' life in the room, and hardly an invite to stay).
4. The floor is uneven as described but also the carpets are stained and the floor needs a refresh
5. The dishes you are expected to use are on the floor under a work surface in the kitchen area
6. The main reason we didn't stay is the smell of damp that prevailed over everything, it took us a while to leave its discomfort behind
7. I am aware of the impact of damp and air quality on respiratory illness and would consider this an area that really needs some attention.
In addition to this the host will tell you how it’s a ‘bespoke’ style you were warned about and as to the smell?? Well tough luck it rains in Wales. I live in Wales…have done all my life and a damp, stale smell is not something I have to live with. It’s laughable really if my dad wasn’t out of pocket by £360 with no attempt to compromise with the host. Do not bother answering this with lies I hope no-one else feels the way I feel right now you should not be allowed to host properties. Booking.com you really need to regulate your properties…‘different style’ I am fine with but cleanliness I cannot compromise on!!

Disappointing
Being situated on Lion Street was excellent for access to the centre of Hay.
Rather too quirky for us. Bed against the wall was difficult for bathroom visits. Also a small shelf would have allowed a small lamp and overnight glass of water.

Great location. Tamara was an excellent host, we didn't meet her, she responded to all our queries.
We liked the location as it's close to river Wye walks, restaurants and book shops. The property is quiet spacious, it has lots of character and the bed is comfortable.
The kitchen facilities were limited and more utensils for cooking would be useful for self catering.
The bed is against a wall so can only be accessed from one side.
There is no garden, so not a perfect venue for dog owners but Half Moon house is close to great walks.

Quirky little place
Located right in the heart of Hay on Wye, popular pub (a tapas bar) and excellent restaurant on the doorstep.
Really lovely old property with oak beams and and comfortable feel. Few mod cons and no TV, which we really liked!
The second bed is a futon type with a fairly thin mattress which was not a problem for me as I’m a good sleeper but others might find it uncomfortable.

Perfection
Had absolutely the best stay here in Hay-on-Wye at the Half Moon House! Cannot fault anything, our stay was perfect. The property was super cosy and had a homely feel, Tamara was so sweet and accommodating, and it's situated right in the heart of the town (in the oldest building in Hay which was cool!) There is a great feel to the place and the bed was really comfortable. Plenty to do around, lots of places to eat and drink and shop, and close to lots of places to walk.
Would love to visit again! Thanks Tamara :)
