Amalia Harbor

We have been ‘Island Hopping’ the Greek islands now for 22 years, this year starting our journey flying into Rhodes for a 3 night stay at the Filoxenia , then onward to the island of Chalki, staying at the Amalia Harbor. “On arrival the quayside is a bustling place, as island provisions & sundry cargo are off loaded, whilst foot passengers wait to board for the return journey to Kamiros Skala. We look out for someone carrying a sign for our accommodation, ‘Amelia Harbour’: no sign but a voice calls the accommodation name & our luggage is safely taken in hand with a welcoming smile & we are invited to trundle behind our newly met islanders who, with our luggage, lead us a short walk from the harbour quay to our accommodation, 50 metres, overlooking the harbour. Our luggage is lifted a flight of stairs, the door to our apartment is unlocked, & the collectors of our luggage leave with a welcoming smile, wishing us both an enjoyable holiday break in Chalki: Such a nice warm welcome to this intriguing island! From the outside our accommodation over a Gyros snack bar displays a freshly painted traditional frontage, with a balcony overlooking the harbour on a narrow paved street, alongside the quaintest Pharmacy & Travel Agency. We step through the entrance into our accommodation expecting old-traditional but, we are met with freshly modernised, equipped beyond our expectations! The downstairs room, with built in modern kitchen, and superb, tiled bathroom, leads to a balcony overlooking the harbour bay, whilst a flight of stairs adds to the intrigue of this holiday let, by leading to a rooftop bedroom, complete with very effective air conditioning, an additional pedestal fan, & huge double bed with additional storage. Location, location location the villa looks straight across the picturesque small harbour where the sea ferry’s come n go Its right in the middle of everything that happens in this gorgeous village, surprisingly quiet, well designed, recently renovated, small balcony with extraordinary sea views It’s balcony sits above Gyros Halki casual restaurant & is directly opp Pharmacy & travel agency right smack bang in the heart of Halki. There are stairs to access this small villa & again easy wide staircase to the loft bedroom. It’s located on the sea level not up the steep hillside of the village but offers great views to water Air conditioner is a beast, consistent hot water in clean fresh but small bathroom Overall it was great with comfy bed, great sea breezes, felt very secure on this very safe island. The studio was new, very well equipped. We found a welcome present consisting in a bag with typical products of the territory. Everything was brand new.

There are problems with aeration in the study. The bedroom is under the roof and there are no windows or skylights, there are only few narrow opening in the wood floor. Therefore the bedroom takes air only from the windows at the entrance floor. There is air conditioning and a fan, but this is not sufficient to change the air. Also the orientation of the studio is such that you get the sun all day long... and you can't have breakfast in the little balcony because there is no shelter. The location is very convenient, just in front of the main pier in the port. However during the night over there can be very very noisy (until 4 AM sometimes). In general if you decide to stay in Halki, this is not because you want to enjoy nocturnal life... All in all, the studio is nice and pretty, but I would advise the owners to open at least one skylight in the roof, and find a way to put a shelter in the balcony, otherwise in full summer nobody can really enjoy it.
