We chose this hotel as our go to base whenever we returned to Cape Town.

Parking inside, safe and quite central. Rooms very well equipped. Plenty of restaurants nearby to cater for all budgets. Staff very helpful.

If you have heavy suitcases better to go through the parking area as steep stairs lead up to reception.

More garden cottage than boutique hotel

The room was spacious and had a microwave and warm rails for the towel. Lots of TV and streaming options

The rook looked bare. A rug would make it look better. Right now it looks more garden cottage than boutique hotel. Also, the vouchers don't really cover the full breakfast so they shouldn't say breakfast is included

Brilliant location and great place to stay

The hotel is in a brilliant location, very close to trendy bars and restaurants. The fact you receive vouchers for three local restaurants to use for breakfast is brilliant. We received a room upgrade which we were very grateful for

central area to stay

Stayed for one night after our Garden Route tour before our flight back. Busy area, lots of food options. Room was comfortable. Easy to walk along Kloof St & Long St to our walking tour, and easy to return from Bo Kapp. Enjoyed the balcony in the evening. For security, had to buzz in on initial arrival and then used our key cards to get in the building.

For those who are sensitive to noise, it stays loud late since it’s a central area. The only issue we had was not knowing what all the buttons/switches in the room were for. We had to try them all out to see what turned on which lights.

Loved the hotel would recommend to fellow travelers.

The staff where there 24 hours we arrived late and there was someone there to greet us. We had vouchers for breakfast that where perfect because we had a choice.

Not the hotel fault but both nights our room was under the bar area and they had parties there both nights.

Amazing boutique hotel

Great Hotel in an amazingly beautiful and safe location with many nice local cafes around. The staff was very friendly, our room was comfy and had a cool view. Breakfast voucher system is so great, enjoyed a lot Egghead option there. Would love to come back again.

An amazing stay with great location and staff!

Room was exceptional, tons of space and amenities Location was within walking distance to many restaurants and stores. It was also an easy ride to most attractions. Breakfast was fantastics and you got to pick from two local restaurant, within 1-2 mins walk. The staff at Hippo went above and beyond to bring the most comfortable stay.

Breakfast is not at the property, but the hotel provides a voucher to choose from two different restaurants nearby. The voucher is worth only R160 (less than USD10 as of Aug. 2025), which is normally not enough for a complete breakfast in neither of the restaurants.

The location was brilliant, a short Uber ride to V and A waterfront. Easy walk to hop on hop off bus and Bo Kaap. Felt very safe walking around this area and there are lots of nice restaurants so you can try the local cuisine. The team here at the Hippo is amazing with a massive thanks to Karen, who was an absolute superstar. She arranged a great day tour to the cape for us, and nothing was a problem. Great with local knowledge, too. I would also like to mention Allan, who was equally as hospitable although he wasn't on shift as much. The rooms are spacious, very clean, housekeeping keep them spic and span. All in all, a fabulous 5 night stay, which we would rate 5 stars out if 5.

There is no better place to stay in Cape Town!

Look no further—Hippo Boutique Hotel is the place to stay in Cape Town! Fantastic location in the heart of the Gardens area, a short Uber ride to the waterfront. I was drawn in by the trendy area and loved the idea of three restaurants to choose from for breakfast! They did not disappoint! Each was delicious and all within walking distance. (One was downstairs!) There is a grocery store around the corner, spas in the area, and the room was top notch! The room was heavenly! The bed was cozy, A/C perfect, the kitchenette was useful, and I can’t rave enough about the bathroom! The shower was hot with ideal water pressure and the bathtub allowed for perfect nightly bubble baths! Pick up a bubble bar from Lush at the V&A Waterfront mall and your stay will be complete! I can’t rave enough and look forward to a future stay! Other reviews struggled to find the lift, but it was easy to locate from the parking area, and I was at the front side of the building and did not hear the outside noise.

Great Location

Very well located, fun, busy area, full of restaurants. Staff were friendly and helpful. They have on site parking which is fabulous to have in the city. Only suggestion I have is that they add sheer curtains over the Roman blinds so you can have natural light and privacy in the room and not just fully open windows or fully closed. Other than that, the small details are great. Having a make up mirror, enough plugs etc

The worst hotel experience in Africa from 30 years of Travel. The owners should be ashamed of themself only to offer one

Location

This was the stop over for the night on way to a Galla dinner, load shedding challenges has been an everyday thing in South Africa where i reside for the past years, not having reached a new level sadly. The hotel room had one light working during load shedding in the room. This light was locked so you could not move it around. Hence no light in the toilet nor any electricity for any other purpose. It was impossible to stay and complained to the front desk. Left after 30 minutes and wrote a letter on booking.com to the place to which the decided to never respond. This is the worst hotel experience and service I have had traveling extensively in Africa for 30 years and then op top they charge well over Rand 2.000 for a room.
