Disappointing unlike previous excellent visits
Area hptel itself, most of the staff great
Rude staff member ruined the trip had to leave a day early as just felt uncomfortable going downstairs after incident with a member of staff being rude to my father ( which was admitted to be my father catching the staff member at the wrong time ) refund given for the last night as we left

A strange experience at an otherwise charming hotel
The property itself is beautiful, set in lovely grounds, and the building has great character. We stayed one night as two adults with a two-year-old, and it really is a charming setting. Breakfast was included in our booking, and although we had to pre-book a time the night before, the staff in the restaurant were friendly and the cooked breakfast was good. The property had a warm, country-house atmosphere, and the breakfast team helped make the morning pleasant. In the end, the receptionist did process a refund for the disputed £10 charge, which at least resolved the issue.
When we arrived late in the evening, we were asked to pay an additional £10 that was said to be outstanding on our bill. We paid without issue, but when we got to our room we noticed a large patch of mould on the bedroom ceiling, which was disappointing. The next morning, when checking out, I queried the £10 charge and was told it was for the cot. I showed the receptionist that our Booking.com confirmation clearly stated that cots were complimentary, but he insisted the hotel’s policy was to charge for them and said Booking.com’s information wasn’t their responsibility. I explained that the hotel itself sets its own profile and policies on Booking.com, so this seemed to be an error on their end.
The conversation then took an odd turn when he asked, “What would you say if I said it was hotel policy to charge for cots? I guess it would be a black mark against the hotel’s name?” I wasn’t sure how to respond — it was a very unusual exchange. I simply reiterated that I didn’t want to be charged incorrectly. Eventually, he said, “I’ll put my neck on the line and refund you for all it is,” and processed the refund. While we did get our money back, the entire interaction left us feeling quite uncomfortable. It was one of the strangest experiences I’ve had at a hotel anywhere in the world.

A lovely place to stay set in beautiful surroundings helps you relax
Its charm, warm, friendly and inviting set in lovely surroundings, I love the staircase and the lounge.
I found it cold at night and tried the central heating to no avail . The breakfast was nice but of poor proportions , I couldn’t understand why they only served half a piece of delicious black pudding and mini sausage. I didn’t try the evening menu as I found the prices very expensive.

Enjoyed every minute of the stay.
Spectacular building of considerable character both inside and out. Located within mature well maintained grounds adjacent to the River Nith resulting in fabulous views from most of the bedroom windows.
Only the poor quality car parking which turned into a large muddy puddle following heavy rain.

A lovely break in beautiful surroundings.
The breakfast was ideal and the right quantity, we also appreciated our dog been given a sausage for his breakfast 😋🐾
All the staff were lovely and looked after us very well.

Country walkers paradise
Fantastic setting, in the middle of a peaceful countryside, with amazing walking options.
Staff were very flexible, offering us dinner even after hours.
A little maintenance might be needed - we spotted wet walls and some signs of wear and tear. I guess that comes with a Victorian building.

A lovely setting but need some attention inside hotel.
The hotel was in need of some TLC, a beautiful setting in hidden woods with a very long drive way up to the hotel.
It is very old and tired looking. The staff were very helpful and kind but could do with a few more staff to be fair on the few that were working there.
We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel and our small dog had breakfast as well. A beautiful garden setting with a river running through the woods.
Needs freshened up, Carpets torn on stairways and the windows need a good clean, the window in the toilets have 10 year old spiders on them with a 3 course meal of flies.
It is a pity as it is an amazing setting, as I said it needs a bit of TLC.

Again, wasn't disappointed and would definitely stay again as value for money and friendly.
Upon booking, one was remembered from my previous "Sojourn" in March, and was messaged informing I was to be allocated the same room as last time! Fantastic stuff, as it looked over to the front grounds and river and I could people watch people from the window! in the morning before I myself went off on my usual travails!!
Also that the staff were the same when on duty and they tried to allocate my usual table at Dinner, so one could people watch!
I was also very surprised on 1st morning in time I'd went and been to breakfast my actual whole bedding had been changed. As I'm usually tidy and know the Housekeeping have their work cut out.
On the Sunday, 3rd evening, as in the bath the room phone rang, and upon appearing for my pre-dinner lager, the receptionist had said they'd call to enquire if I was still dining in the evening, as I was later back to hotel than day before. (Although upon checking in I did say I'd be dining 7.45-8pm!. Great for the concern though, as one had been stuck behind a very slow car on the way back!!! to hotel.
It was the usual friendly "Couthy", cosy hug of a stay, friendly staff and comfort and met some lovely people, although no Great Hall Fire, as being end of June, spent most pre-evening dinner lager and finishing of wine in cosy bar in comfortable winged chair. We played how to get the subtitles off the bar/lounge TV, gladly that was rectified on the 2nd evening!!
It pays to check your bill before departure, as I noted some paid and just went to their cars then popped back to Reception. I always make a note of what extras I have. I had ordered the main menu steak first night, and discovered why it had taken so long, plus it wasn't as well done as I'd have liked. (they did offer an alternative.) Upon checking my bill I'd been served up the more expensive steak dish. Also I had a phantom double one evening for dinner!! Gladly these were both adjusted accordingly by my new found friend on Reception.

The Hotel was so lovely and its oldie world decor and turrets, suited me wonderfully well. The River
Breakfast was lovely. Full Scottish breakfast with haggis
The silly toaster that takes ages to toast. Better off with a 4 slice toaster

Tired in many ways
Location lovely even when raining hard.
Smelly bedroom. Attempts had been made to mask underlying bad niffs with very strong room 'freshening' odouriser. Bed uncomfortable old springs in mattress. Shower impossible to use unless waiting for at least 2 minutes for hot water to arrive then regulating the dribbly shower meant not enjoyable shower. Very noisy floorboards in room above and access door to stairs behind our room added to broken sleep. Breakfast staff sparse no attention to us arriving to eat. Eventually just sat despite notice saying please wait etc.

Great potential sadly squandered
It is very tired and feels like staying at a die at heel institution. Needs a lot of. Care and attention to the property which is in a beautiful location. Chatting with a couple of local salmon fishermen on the river walk was lovely. The hotel is not.
No sign of upkeep.

Stay was ok but wouldn’t return.
Good location, quiet lovely grounds and views
Staff in restaurant were very slow. Our evening meal we asked for tap water and extra gravy never received either when all other tables were automatically served water upon arrival.
Couldn’t use the bath as the plug provided didn’t fit the bath.
General decoration in our room looked tired, paint peeling off the ceiling in places.

Everything! It was peaceful, everyone was very accommodating and thoughtful. The Dunn Mohr cottage was lovely and cozy! The lamb dinner was excellent!

Adequate but not memorable
Size of room was nice
Good towels
Decent bed
Car park in dire need or attention, full of holes
Some of the staff were a little unfriendly
Noise from staircase and water/sewer pipes
Lumpy pillows - What is that hotels don't know a good pillow if it hit them in the face
Unimaginative breakfast - catering supplies special is same same same as everyone else

Lovely old hotel in a peaceful setting
Lovely setting by the Nith, went for a walk around the grounds after arriving. Decent pint of Caley Best and a good range of gins.
The midges that invaded our room whilst we were in the bar (as it was warm the hotel team had opened a window in our room.)

Location beautiful
Looking very tired real shame as could be fabulous hotel if upgraded.

Under expectations
As scenery, beautiful place closed to the river, surounded by nature
Available parking and restaurant at location.
It seemed that the room was in an old part of building, not refurbished. There were a lot of spiderweb at the windows and also around the chandelier in the room, the window hardly closing, the shower was not worked properly.

Enjoyed our stay, but don't think it's value for money.
Ben on reception very helpful and pleasant.
Rooms clean and comfortable bed.
Restaurant service staff could be more pleasant,
Food overpriced
Rooms a bit tired and windows need some attention

The building and surroundings were beautiful but the hotel is tired, with a poor breakfast offering
Beautiful setting and amazing building
Wallpaper peeling off the walls in the bedrooms and flaky paintwork . Bathroom needs updating and the toilet seat doesn’t stay up . Breakfast was awful - eggs Benedict - one half of a muffin, cheapest ham and an overcooked hard poached egg. The coffee was weak and undrinkable . Lack of choice for a cooked breakfast. All fruit was tinned and poorly presented .

A useful stop over
Style of the hotel is superb but sadly in parts upstairs the decor is looking a bit tired and with bits of peeling wallpaper showing in bedroom corridor and bedroom it does need a bit of tlc - though NOT a makeover, otherwise it would lose its charm. The location by the river is wonderful and its size is perfect - which could give you a feeling as a guest of being part of the family, rather than some anonymous visitor passing through.
Not having satellite tv - couldn’t get the channels I wanted. The location of the TV in a single room was also pretty hopeless for watching it comfortably, and there was no where else I could watch TV either.
The evening dinner menu was rather limited - would’ve liked some healthier options.
Also the breakfast was a bit limited in terms of the availability of a variety of yoghurts and fresh fruit. Cafetière coffee would’ve been good as an option too. Would’ve been good also to have been offered fresh milk for the room. Again for a smaller hotel you’d expect to be able to get that type of service.

Location and grounds stunning, room needs massive tlc and carpets vacuumed.
The location, lounge area
Upstairs area very dated and room needs tlc. Walls cracked, damp patches, spiders all over windows and filthy, also the pane of glass had fell out of the frame, terrible condition. Single bed in the room has never been moved away from wall, terribly dusty and filthy down the bed. Bathroom very dated and dirty grout. Carpet was full of dog hairs and dirt near bed on arrival, we have a non shedding dog. Cob webs everywhere on water pipes and skirting terrible condition. One staff member on reception lovely, other one no so much. Food choice very limited, only served two course dinner and for £34 was ridiculously priced for what you got, was still hungry afterwards. Dining room for guests without dogs was lovely and properly kitted out, however because we had a dog we ended up in a room that looked abandoned, stained ceiling, carpet full and I mean full of dog hairs. Really disappointed.
