This is the teeniest thing- no socket beside the bed! Would not prevent me from staying again though- it is really lovely.

The location and the big lounge with open fire were good
The bedroom needed a surface and deep clean. I found it hard to believe the small size of the full breakfast and the continental was also very minimal. It was impossible to get from the car park to the front door without getting muddy shoes and I needed my phone as a torch to see the way.

Charming and quirky historical building with beautiful surrounds and friendly staff.
It’s a bit dated needs some renovation

The food was tasty
The rooms were lacking in style. The superior room was very small with the corner of bedside table very close to one’s head. The shower wasn’t very powerful abs the water wasn’t that warm. The bedside light didn’t work.

Attractive hotel with a most interesting history in a lovely location. It felt very Christmassy with the festive decorations throughout the hotel and a crackling open fire. Staff friendly and welcoming.
Good breakfast choice with other breakfast options at an extra cost (eg Eggs Benedict). Dinner was first rate with a two or three course set menu option.
Large bedroom (Rowan, room 206) with a most comfortable mattress and lovely open views. There's no fridge in the room but ample provisions on the hospitality tray including hot chocolate which was welcome in the chilly weather. Bathroom was a little dated but wasn't a problem with a shower over the bath.
There's a lift which saved having to carry the bags up the stairs (also festively decorated!) to our second floor room.
The hotel is dog friendly and there's also a strong fishing link, judging by the decorations in the bar and the leaflet offering three separate 3-day fly fishing events in 2026. The hotel is by the River Nith There is plenty of parking with disabled parking spaces in front of the entrance.

Everything. Loved it so much we booked a second night. The negatives were not enough to stop us booking again. Evening meals were delicious.
Room was cold overnight. Shower needed upgrade. Low pressure and took forever to get warm.

The property itself is beautiful, set in lovely grounds, and the building has great character. We stayed one night as two adults with a two-year-old, and it really is a charming setting. Breakfast was included in our booking, and although we had to pre-book a time the night before, the staff in the restaurant were friendly and the cooked breakfast was good. The property had a warm, country-house atmosphere, and the breakfast team helped make the morning pleasant. In the end, the receptionist did process a refund for the disputed £10 charge, which at least resolved the issue.
When we arrived late in the evening, we were asked to pay an additional £10 that was said to be outstanding on our bill. We paid without issue, but when we got to our room we noticed a large patch of mould on the bedroom ceiling, which was disappointing. The next morning, when checking out, I queried the £10 charge and was told it was for the cot. I showed the receptionist that our Booking.com confirmation clearly stated that cots were complimentary, but he insisted the hotel’s policy was to charge for them and said Booking.com’s information wasn’t their responsibility. I explained that the hotel itself sets its own profile and policies on Booking.com, so this seemed to be an error on their end.
The conversation then took an odd turn when he asked, “What would you say if I said it was hotel policy to charge for cots? I guess it would be a black mark against the hotel’s name?” I wasn’t sure how to respond — it was a very unusual exchange. I simply reiterated that I didn’t want to be charged incorrectly. Eventually, he said, “I’ll put my neck on the line and refund you for all it is,” and processed the refund. While we did get our money back, the entire interaction left us feeling quite uncomfortable. It was one of the strangest experiences I’ve had at a hotel anywhere in the world.

Its charm, warm, friendly and inviting set in lovely surroundings, I love the staircase and the lounge.
I found it cold at night and tried the central heating to no avail . The breakfast was nice but of poor proportions , I couldn’t understand why they only served half a piece of delicious black pudding and mini sausage. I didn’t try the evening menu as I found the prices very expensive.

Spectacular building of considerable character both inside and out. Located within mature well maintained grounds adjacent to the River Nith resulting in fabulous views from most of the bedroom windows.
Only the poor quality car parking which turned into a large muddy puddle following heavy rain.

The breakfast was ideal and the right quantity, we also appreciated our dog been given a sausage for his breakfast 😋🐾
All the staff were lovely and looked after us very well.
The location is stunning and very relaxing.
Our stay met all our needs and nothing we didn’t like.

Fantastic setting, in the middle of a peaceful countryside, with amazing walking options.
Staff were very flexible, offering us dinner even after hours.
A little maintenance might be needed - we spotted wet walls and some signs of wear and tear. I guess that comes with a Victorian building.

The hotel was in need of some TLC, a beautiful setting in hidden woods with a very long drive way up to the hotel.
It is very old and tired looking. The staff were very helpful and kind but could do with a few more staff to be fair on the few that were working there.
We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel and our small dog had breakfast as well. A beautiful garden setting with a river running through the woods.
Needs freshened up, Carpets torn on stairways and the windows need a good clean, the window in the toilets have 10 year old spiders on them with a 3 course meal of flies.
It is a pity as it is an amazing setting, as I said it needs a bit of TLC.

Upon booking, one was remembered from my previous "Sojourn" in March, and was messaged informing I was to be allocated the same room as last time! Fantastic stuff, as it looked over to the front grounds and river and I could people watch people from the window! in the morning before I myself went off on my usual travails!!
Also that the staff were the same when on duty and they tried to allocate my usual table at Dinner, so one could people watch!
I was also very surprised on 1st morning in time I'd went and been to breakfast my actual whole bedding had been changed. As I'm usually tidy and know the Housekeeping have their work cut out.
On the Sunday, 3rd evening, as in the bath the room phone rang, and upon appearing for my pre-dinner lager, the receptionist had said they'd call to enquire if I was still dining in the evening, as I was later back to hotel than day before. (Although upon checking in I did say I'd be dining 7.45-8pm!. Great for the concern though, as one had been stuck behind a very slow car on the way back!!! to hotel.
It was the usual friendly "Couthy", cosy hug of a stay, friendly staff and comfort and met some lovely people, although no Great Hall Fire, as being end of June, spent most pre-evening dinner lager and finishing of wine in cosy bar in comfortable winged chair. We played how to get the subtitles off the bar/lounge TV, gladly that was rectified on the 2nd evening!!
It pays to check your bill before departure, as I noted some paid and just went to their cars then popped back to Reception. I always make a note of what extras I have. I had ordered the main menu steak first night, and discovered why it had taken so long, plus it wasn't as well done as I'd have liked. (they did offer an alternative.) Upon checking my bill I'd been served up the more expensive steak dish. Also I had a phantom double one evening for dinner!! Gladly these were both adjusted accordingly by my new found friend on Reception.

Breakfast was lovely. Full Scottish breakfast with haggis
The silly toaster that takes ages to toast. Better off with a 4 slice toaster

Location lovely even when raining hard.
Smelly bedroom. Attempts had been made to mask underlying bad niffs with very strong room 'freshening' odouriser. Bed uncomfortable old springs in mattress. Shower impossible to use unless waiting for at least 2 minutes for hot water to arrive then regulating the dribbly shower meant not enjoyable shower. Very noisy floorboards in room above and access door to stairs behind our room added to broken sleep. Breakfast staff sparse no attention to us arriving to eat. Eventually just sat despite notice saying please wait etc.

It is very tired and feels like staying at a die at heel institution. Needs a lot of. Care and attention to the property which is in a beautiful location. Chatting with a couple of local salmon fishermen on the river walk was lovely. The hotel is not.
No sign of upkeep.
